The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical Is Bringing Greek Mythology to the Stage

Demigods. Greek gods. Monsters. A missing lightning bolt. An epic road trip. And an original rock score.

Yep. This sounds like a quest worth accepting.

The USM Department of Theatre and the Osher School of Music, in collaboration with the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine, are bringing The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical to the stage.

Based on Rick Riordan's bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians novel, The Lightning Thief takes audiences on a mythical adventure filled with action, friendship, humor, danger, and—because apparently being a teenager wasn't difficult enough already—Greek mythology.

Welcome to Camp Half-Blood... Sort Of

For anyone unfamiliar with the story, here's the setup:

Teenager Percy Jackson discovers that he's not exactly an ordinary kid.

He's a demigod.

Which sounds pretty cool until you realize that being the son of a Greek god comes with responsibilities, monsters, complicated family dynamics, and the occasional world-threatening crisis.

When Zeus's master lightning bolt goes missing, Percy and his friends embark on an epic journey to find it and prevent a war among the gods.

Because nothing says “coming-of-age experience” quite like preventing an Olympian war.

From Bestseller to Broadway-Style Adventure

The Lightning Thief is adapted from Rick Riordan's bestselling book and transforms the beloved story into a fast-paced musical adventure.

And this isn't simply a book with a few songs added.

The production features a thrilling original rock score, bringing Percy's mythical world to life through music.

Greek mythology meets rock musical.

Honestly, Zeus probably should have seen this coming.

A Quest Worthy of the Gods

Percy's journey isn't just about finding a missing weapon.

It's about discovering who you are, figuring out where you belong, and learning what you're capable of when the odds are very much against you.

Along the way, Percy and his friends encounter gods, monsters, mysteries, and plenty of challenges.

It's a story about friendship, bravery, identity, family, and believing in yourself—wrapped inside a seriously entertaining mythical adventure.

In other words, there's something here for both longtime Percy Jackson fans and people encountering the story for the first time.

Percy Jackson Fans, Assemble!

If you've spent any amount of time reading Rick Riordan's books, debating which Greek god you'd be descended from, or wondering whether your school field trip might secretly lead to a quest involving ancient mythology...

This is your show.

And if you're new to the Percy Jackson universe?

That's okay, too.

You don't need to know every Olympian, memorize Greek mythology, or have your own celestial bronze weapon to enjoy the adventure.

Although we're not going to discourage you from bringing one.

A Collaboration Bringing Mythology to Maine

The production brings together the USM Department of Theatre, the Osher School of Music, and the Children's Museum & Theatre of Maine.

That's a pretty great combination for a production that lives at the intersection of theater, music, storytelling, and imaginative play.

It's also a reminder that great geek culture doesn't only live on movie screens and streaming services.

Sometimes it takes the stage.

And sometimes the stage contains Greek gods.

Worthy of the Gods

The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical promises an action-packed mythical adventure filled with music, humor, friendship, and plenty of larger-than-life mythology.

Whether you're a devoted Percy Jackson reader, a musical theater fan, a mythology nerd, or someone looking for a fun theatrical adventure for the family, this is a quest worth joining.

Grab your friends.

Grab the kids.

Grab your copy of The Lightning Thief if you haven't read it yet.

Then get ready to follow Percy Jackson on a journey where the fate of the gods—and possibly the entire world—is in the hands of a teenager.

No pressure, Percy.

Let the quest begin!
