Bread & Puppet Circus Returns to Portland With Puppets, Protest & Plenty of Weirdness

Giant puppets. Stilt dancers. A riotous brass band. Paper maché beasts. Protest theater. Sourdough rye bread.

Yep.

This sounds like exactly the kind of thing we need to be talking about.

Bread & Puppet Circus is coming back to Portland, bringing its wonderfully strange, visually spectacular, politically charged brand of theater to Fort Allen Park on Portland's Eastern Promenade.

And because this is Bread & Puppet, you can probably leave your expectations for traditional theater somewhere back at the box office.

There isn't one.

Bread & Puppet Is Back!

Mayo Street Arts is bringing Bread & Puppet Circus to Fort Allen Park for an outdoor performance overlooking Casco Bay.

If you've never experienced Bread & Puppet, prepare yourself.

This isn't simply a puppet show.

It's a giant, surreal, musical, theatrical spectacle featuring stilt dancers, enormous paper maché creatures, live brass music, political commentary, absurdity, celebration, and plenty of visual chaos.

Basically, if your definition of theater involves sitting quietly in a dark room while actors politely perform a three-act drama, this may require some recalibration.

And that's exactly why it's so much fun.

“Is It or Is It Not?”

Bread & Puppet's performance asks some very big questions:

Is it or is it not?

Am I asleep or am I awake?

Am I a cockroach or am I a me?

Honestly, we're intrigued already.

The performance confronts what Bread & Puppet describes as humanity's “upside-down situation,” using its unique combination of puppetry, music, political satire, visual art, and theatrical spectacle.

The result is theater that isn't afraid to be strange, loud, funny, confrontational, beautiful, and completely unlike anything else you're likely to see this weekend.

Meet the Possibilitarians

Bread & Puppet's performance calls on the Possibilitarians to confront the absurdities of the modern world.

The production takes aim at government falsehoods and what it sees as a radically wrong system, replacing what it calls “luxury silence and despair” with revolt orchestras and a celebration of possibility.

It's protest theater.

But it's protest theater with giant puppets and a brass band.

Which, frankly, feels like a pretty memorable way to make a point.

A Circus on the Eastern Promenade

There's also something special about the setting.

Fort Allen Park, overlooking Casco Bay, provides the backdrop for this outdoor performance.

Instead of a traditional theater seat, you'll be sitting outside with the waterfront around you while larger-than-life puppets and performers take over the park.

The performance lasts approximately 90 minutes, and the band begins playing at 3:40 PM.

Bring a chair or blanket, sunscreen, and water—and prepare for an afternoon that probably won't resemble your average trip to the park.

And Then There's the Bread

Because this is Bread & Puppet, there is, naturally, bread.

After the performance, Bread & Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli.

That's right.

You can experience politically charged puppet theater and then have some bread.

We appreciate a production with snacks.

There will also be Cheap Art available for purchase, including books, posters, postcards, pamphlets, and banners from the Bread & Puppet Press.

One of the best parts?

Admission is free.

This is a free outdoor performance at Fort Allen Park, making it an accessible opportunity to experience one of the country's most distinctive and influential theater companies.

That said, free doesn't mean you shouldn't support the artists.

Attendees are encouraged to bring cash to donate to Bread & Puppet, or make a donation ahead of time through the event's ticket page.
