Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind – Now at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) presents Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind, one of the most comprehensive exhibitions of Yoko Ono’s groundbreaking career. As the only U.S. venue to host this remarkable retrospective, the MCA showcases over 200 works spanning performance, film, photography, music, and conceptual art, tracing Ono’s profound impact on contemporary culture and her unwavering commitment to peace.

Since the 1950s, Yoko Ono has been a trailblazing artist, visionary musician, and activist for world peace. This exhibition explores her contributions to Fluxus, conceptualism, performance art, experimental film, and music, featuring landmark works such as:

  • Cut Piece (1964) – Ono’s iconic participatory performance.

  • Film No.4 (Bottoms) (1966–67) – her bold “petition for peace,” once banned.

  • Fly (1970–71) – a seminal experimental film.

  • Collaborations with John Lennon, John Cage, and Ornette Coleman.

  • Ongoing projects like Wish Tree (1996–present) and public artworks Imagine Peace (2003) and Peace is Power (2017).

Participatory art remains central to Ono’s practice. Visitors can engage with interactive installations such as My Mommy is Beautiful (2004) and Wish Trees, contributing their own reflections and wishes for peace.

Spanning seven decades and three continents, Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind highlights her radical approach to language, art, and activism, inviting audiences to rethink the relationship between imagination, creativity, and social change.

Organized by Tate Modern in collaboration with Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf, and curated in Chicago by Jamillah James and Korina Hernandez, the exhibition runs in the Griffin Galleries of Contemporary Art at MCA Chicago.

Don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime retrospective of an artist whose voice continues to resonate with urgency, hope, and power.
