First THE NEW MUTANTS Trailer Brings Horror to X-Men Films

An X-Men movie as a horror film.

That's the premise for the first trailer for The New Mutants, the upcoming film from director Josh Boone, based on the Marvel Comics mutant superteam.  20th Century Fox released the two-minute trailer late last night, giving us our first good look at the new addition to X-Men movie franchise.

The trailer opens with inside a creepy secret facility, with Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) speaking to Mirage/Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt).  "I'm going to ask you a series of questions," begins Reyes as the camera slowly moves down a corridor.  "I want you to respond truthfully.  Have you ever hurt someone?"

"Yes," replies Danielle softly, as we see a cemetery with graves only marked with crosses and numbers in the hundreds.

We hear a chorus singing "We don't need no education" from the Pink Floyd song "Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)", as we see Danielle sitting in a chair with some sort of electrode attached to the temple of her forehead.  "Have you ever experienced anything you consider...abnormal?" asks Reyes.

"Yes," answers Danielle, as we get a shot of Reyes watching a series of security cam monitors.  "Last question," says Reyes.  "Do you know what mutants are?"

We don't hear Danielle's answer to the third question, but instead switch to a scene where Reyes is drawing a blood sample from Danielle.  "Did you know baby rattlesnakes are more dangerous than adult ones?" asks Reyes.  "They haven't learned how to control how much venom they secrete."

We see fleeting glimpses of the other New Mutants, Magik/Illyana Rasputin (Anya Taylor-Joy), Sunspot/Roberto da Costa (Henry Zaga), Wolfsbane/Rahne Sinclair (Maisie Williams), and Cannonball/Sam Guthrie (Charlie Heaton).  Reyes remarks, "All of you are dangerous.  That's why you're here."

Inside the facility's laundry room, Sam sees a washing machine jostling without being turned on.  He goes to look through the darkened machine window, but the inside of the machine suddenly ignites with fire as a hand of someone palms the window.

Next, we see an image of Reyes with the sides of her face clawed by something.  Danielle wakes up in a room, fingers a drop of blood and asks "What is this place?" as a face suddenly emerges from the wall beside her.

"This isn't a hospital, it's a haunted house!" says a male voice, as we see Illyana and Sam standing in a doorway looking stunned at a bald figure in black wearing a large white smiley-face mask.  The figure rips off the mask and Illyana screams in terror.

Illyana and Sam take off running down the corridor, and we see fleeting images of what appears to be Illyana as a little girl waking up in her bed, Sam working in a coal mine in Kentucky, Reyes forcibly injecting something into Illyana's neck, and Rahne screaming in terror at something inside the women's shower room.

"You've been through a lot," says Reyes in the trailer's final scene.  "Get some rest."  This is immediately followed by a shot of Danielle with some sort of breathing apparatus strapped over her mouth and screaming in terror.

Matt Ryan Confirmed to Reprise Constantine on LEGENDS OF TOMORROW

You didn't think a new animated web series was enough for everyone's favorite exorcist, demonologist, and master petty dabbler of the dark arts, did you?

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed rumors that Matt Ryan will reprise his role of DC Comics/VERTIGO character John Constantine once again, this time in a two-episode arc on the CW series Legends of Tomorrow.

According to the article, Constantine will appear in Episodes 9 and 10 of Legends of Tomorrow Season 3, which will take place chronologically after his previous appearance on Arrow in the Season 4 episode "Haunted".

Ryan, 36, began appearing as John Constantine in the short-lived (but fondly remembered) NBC series Constantine, which ran for 13 episodes from 2014 to 2015 before being cancelled.  After appearing on Arrow later in 2015, he returned to voice the character for the 2017 DC Comics animated movie Justice League Dark.  In addition, Ryan will voice the character for a Constantine animated web series for CW Seed, which is slated for release sometime in 2018.

"Having Matt Ryan reprise his iconic — dare we say legendary — role of John Constantine on Legends is something that [executive producer] Marc [Guggenheim] and I have been working toward since season one, and now the stars have finally aligned," said executive producer Phil Klemmer.  "While we are working to finish our 2017 Arrowverse crossover, which is no joke the most ambitious bit of network TV that four shows have ever had the audacity and insanity to endeavor, we were looking for a way to make an equally exciting 2018 return.  That's how we came up with Matt Ryan."

"As for the character of Constantine," added Klemmer, "we knew that an alienated, chain-smoking, bisexual, world-weary demonologist would feel right at home among our Legends.  His appearance in episode 310 will involve the following: a revisiting of Arrow season four and the events following that season's finale episode; a confrontation with this season's Big Bad on Legends — the name we've only heard whispered until now, Mallus; some hot sex — something that has been in short supply on the Waverider thus far in season three; and Damien Darhk [Neil McDonough], because how can you do an episode about dark magic and not have Damien Darhk?  More than anything, the episode promises to be scary as you know what.  Tonally, it's The Exorcist meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.  Demonic possession in a mental institution — what's not to love?"

Legends of Tomorrow Season 3 premieres tonight on The CW at 9 p.m. EST.

STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI Trailer Teases Leia's Death & Rey's Dark Side

Is Rey going to follow Ben Solo to the Dark Side?

That's one of several questions posed by the new trailer for the film Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Episode VIII of the main Star Wars saga, that debuted during last night's Monday Night Football game, where the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Chicago Bears 20-17.

The two minute, thirty second trailer opens with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) standing in front of a window, overlooking what appears to be a weapons plant manufacturing dozens of First Order combat walkers.

We hear a voiceover from Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), who says "When I found you, I saw raw, untamed power.  And beyond that, something truly special."

We cut to Crait, a new mineral planet that now serves as a base of operations for General Leia’s Resistance.  Old school AT-ATs are on the march, along side larger versions known as AT-M6s, as well as Kylo Ren’s personal shuttle.

The next few shots show Kylo Ren leading a garrison of stormtroopers through a craggy black rock formation, then kneeling in a blood-red room and reaching down to pick up his lightsaber.

Cutting to the planet Ahch-To, we see Rey (Daisy Ridley) finally handing over the lightsaber she recovered in The Force Awakens to Jedi Master Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).  "Something inside me has always been there," remarks Rey.  "But now it’s awake.  And I need help."

Rey walks toward what looks like a giant, decayed tree trunk.  Inside the tree, she finds a modest bookshelf first shown in the teaser trailer.  Rey then demonstrates her will over the Force, sending cracks through the ground as she meditates.

Luke appears considerably terrified by Rey's strength in the Force.  "I’ve seen this raw strength only once before," he begins, as the trailer cuts to a flashback. Luke’s mechanical arm emerges from a heap of fiery splintered wood.  Standing next to R2-D2, Luke's knees buckle at the sight of his temple ablaze.  "It didn't scare me enough then.  It does now."

We see a close-up of Kylo Ren’s face, which highlights the scar that Rey gave him in the previous film is now covered by a black metallic strip, either for healing or simply accentuating his new facial feature.  He smashes his helmet against a wall, echoing the shot in the teaser of its shattered remains.

"Let the past die," remarks Kylo Ren.  "Kill it if you have to.  That’s the only way to become what you were meant to be."

Kylo Ren shows his family's talent for flying in his new TIE silencer, ripping through Resistance capital ships.  Snoke’s Mega Star Destroyer, the Supremacy, is visible in the background.  We then see General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), Kylo Ren’s mother and leader of the Resistance, as she watches the carnage.  Kylo Ren aims at the bridge of a ship, his grip tightening around the firing mechanism, as it's heavily implied that Kylo Ren will murder his mother as well.

The Millennium Falcon speeds through a cave of red crystals, which may be the minerals found on Crait.  The mighty Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew and Joonas Suotamo) lets out a roar as a porg squawks beside him.  The camera doesn’t show us who’s in the Falcon’s pilot seat.

We then see hotshot pilot Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), who makes a brief motivational speech.  "We have a spark that’ll light the fire that’ll burn the First Order down."

The trailer cuts to images of ex-stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) dressed as a First Order officer, presumably in disguise.  Carrying a First Order riot control baton, Finn charges at his nemesis Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) in what appears to be the ruins of the combat walker factory from the beginning of the trailer.

Next, we see a number of fleeting images, including BB-8 shaking off an electric shock in an X-Wing, and Luke lying down in the rain, warning someone off-camera, "This is not going to go the way you think."  Returning to Crait, we see a new creature that resembles a crystalline ice fox running toward what looks like a Resistance base.

Rey plunges into a pool of water and emerges in a grotto.  Luke stands over her wearing his darker robes.  We see a massive battalion of stormtroopers and officers overseeing the factory.  Finn enters, wearing the same disguise he wears while fighting Phasma.

We cut to Snoke, presumably not a giant hologram this time, reaching out to someone off screen  "Fulfill your destiny," he says as we immediately widen to a shot of Rey being bent over by the Force and screaming in agony.

In the final scene, we cut to black and hear Rey’s voice say "I need someone to show me my place in all this." The camera switches to Kylo Ren, surrounded by sparks and ashes, with his face now missing the metallic stripe and leaving the scar behind.  Kylo Ren offers his hand, leading us to think he's offering it to Rey, but the sparks and ashes don't appear alongside Rey, so who knows?

THE X-FILES Season 11 Trailer Debuts at NYCC 2017

The truth is still out there...at least for ten more episodes.

The last day of New York Comic Con 2017 was an eventful one for X-Philes, with the release of the first trailer for The X-Files Season 11, featuring the return of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.  The series will return for ten episodes, once again with executive producer and creator Chris Carter.

The two-minute trailer opens with an ominous voiceover from Scully as she says "Mulder...I've seen it.  I've seen how it begins."

We then see images from the Season 10 finale, "My Struggle II", which ended with Scully traveling to the 14th Street Bridge in Washington, D.C. to assist Mulder and FBI Special Agent Kyd Miller (Robbie Amell).  With Mulder too badly ill to survive without a stem cell transplant, Scully mentioned that William, their son, would have to be the donor.  While Scully and Miller discussed Mulder's prognosis, Mulder began to succumb to the virus killing him.  Suddenly, a beam of light shined down onto Miller, Scully, and Mulder, and a triangle-shaped UFO slowly descended and hovered above them.  The episode ended with Scully looking up at the lights of the spacecraft, shining down directly onto her and her partners.

We cut to a voiceover from the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), as we see Scully walking through a crowded hospital corridor.  "I'm here to offer you a deal," he says as we see Mulder and Scully running through Arlington Cemetery at night.  "Civilization is in its final stages.  I'm asking you to betray the whole human race."

The trailer reveals that CSM is sitting in the passenger seat of a car with FBI Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi).  "Do you mind if I smoke?" he asks.

An older man tells Mulder to "Kill him, before he kills us all" and we glimpse Barbara Hershey as new character Erika Price.  The older man tells Mulder "You're going to save humanity."

Mulder counters, "You want to see blood in the streets, the extermination of seven billion people?"

We then see Scully investigating some sort of facility by herself as her voiceover says "I have to find our son."

Next, we see static-filled cellphone video of Richard Langly (Dean Haglund) from the Lone Gunmen as he warns "Mulder!  They know what we know!"

Mulder and Scully meet with Skinner in a parking garage at night.  Scully tells Skinner, "We need your help...even if we don't trust you."

"How did we get here?" asks Skinner.

We see an interesting action sequence of Scully diving all the way underneath a kitchen table, then overturning it to use as a shield as she fires her weapons against some attackers in black ski masks.

The older man from earlier says to Mulder, "It is the boy, Mr. Mulder."

"My son is none of your business!" replies Mulder angrily.

"He's a very special child."

We then see Scully looking back at a long-haired teenaged male standing behind her, although we can't make out his face.  "William..." gasps Scully.

We cut to Scully clutching her head and gasping in pain inside a hospital.  Weak in her hospital bed, she carresses Mulder's face and whispers to him, "You have to find them, and you have to stop him, before he unleashes hell on Earth.

Fleeting images follow of Mulder and Skinner going at each other in Scully's hospital room, someone trying to strangle Scully, and some sort of strange creature with nasty-looking claws attacking a young girl.

Next, we see Mulder standing beside some statues depicting odd figures apparently laughing as we hear another voiceover from Scully.  "The truth still lies in the X-Files, Mulder."

The last scene is a fleeting image of what appears of be a very young Cigarette Smoking Man smirking as he drags on a cigarette, with a small silvery alien standing off to the side.

CONSTANTINE Animated Web Series Conjures First Look at NYCC 2017

As John Constantine once said to Green Arrow...On with the show.

At New York Comic Con 2017, Warner Bros. TV released the first look at CW Seed's upcoming Constantine animated web series, based on the DC Comics character John Constantine and voiced once again by Constantine TV series actor Matt Ryan.

Armed with an arcane knowledge of the dark arts and a wicked wit, John Constantine fights the good fight.  With his soul already damned to hell, he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the innocent.  With the balance of good and evil on the line‎, Constantine uses his skills to face the supernatural terrors that threaten our world and send them back where they belong. After that, who knows…maybe there’s hope for him and his soul after all.

The CW Seed series is executive produced by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Constantine live-action series, Krypton), Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl) and Sarah Schechter (Blindspot, Riverdale, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow).  The series is produced by Butch Lukic (Justice League Action, Batman Unlimited), written by J.M. DeMatteis (Justice League Dark, Batman vs. Robin) and directed by Doug Murphy (Justice League Action, Young Justice).

The three-minute first look opens with John's long-suffering mate Chas Chandler driving Constantine to a church and looking deeply concerned.

"Unconsecrated," reassures Constantine, referencing the demon blood coursing through his veins.  "Otherwise, I'd have a hard time setting foot in there.  And so would they."

Constantine lights up a smoke, something he was rarely allowed to do on the live-action series and senses something amiss.  "Oh, what's that bloody smell?" he asks.  "Smells like shit."

"Is this the thing that invited us?" asks a demon as a second two-headed demon steps into view.

"Yep, that'll be me," replies Constantine, looking distinctly unimpressed.

"Can it make good on its promise?" asks the two-headed demon.

Constantine drops his cigarette on the floor and rubs it out with his shoe.  "Oh, that.  That was a lie."

The group of five demons threatens Constantine, until an ancient-looking demon bursts through the church doors and thanks Constantine for the promised feast.

The ancient demon starts massacring the group of five demons, while Constantine merely watches and stays out of the bloody fray.  The ancient demon ends up pulverized, however, and one of the surviving five demons stops Constantine just he attempts to leave...

Final JUSTICE LEAGUE Trailer Teases Superman's Return

Even Batman knows that the world needs Superman.

Just in time for New York Comic Con 2017, Warner Bros. dropped the final trailer for Justice League this morning, teasing the return of Henry Cavill as Superman after Cavill's character died at the end of last year's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The three-minute trailer opens with Superman's love, Lois Lane (Amy Adams), standing on the front porch of the Kent farm in Smallville, Kansas as familiar piano notes from Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel theme begin to play.  She sees Clark Kent standing in the middle of cornfield, waving his hand across the cornstalks.  Clark turns around as Lois approaches him, remarking "I'll take that as a yes."  Lois is confused by the statement, so Clark clarifies, "The ring."

We flash back to Lois' hand at the end of Batman v Superman, where she's seen wearing Clark's engagement ring as she drops a small clump of dirt on Clark's grave.  Lois suddenly wakes up, realizing it was a dream, and she reaches out to Clark's empty side of their bed.

A TV news report states, "The world remains in mourning after the death of Superman.  Violence, acts of war, and terrorism are all on the rise."  This is followed by fleeting shots of a Superman memorial banner adorning the Tower Bridge in London and a stack of Daily Planet newspapers with the large headline "World Without Hope".

"I had a dream," begins a voiceover from Batman (Ben Affleck) as we see a set of explosions startling schoolchildren and a swarm of Parademons attacking Paradise Island.  "It was the end of the world."

Suddenly, the New God called Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds) thunders down from the heavens with a forceful blow as we begin to hear a cover of David Bowie's classic song "Heroes" by the band Gang of Youths.  "I think it's something more..." continues Batman.  "Something darker."

We see Commissioner Gordon (J.K. Simmons) switching on the Bat Signal, followed by a voiceover from Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) telling Batman, "You're asking people we don't know to risk their lives."

"A strong man is strongest alone," remarks Bruce Wayne to the other Leaguers.  "You ever heard that?  That's not the saying.  That's the opposite of what the saying is."  We see various images of the Justice League members in action, as Bruce continues, "Divided, we are not enough."

Bruce is shown staring at a hologram of Superman as the voiceover continues.  "The world needs Superman.  I made him a promise.  This is why I brought you together."

We then see Aquaman (Jason Momoa) in the middle of a mid-air battle with Parademons, even though he can't fly.  As he falls, he's suddenly caught by Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who's able to fly thanks to his jet boots.  "The ride ain't over yet," Cyborg says to Aquaman.

Aquaman replies "My man!" with a smile as Cyborg hurls him back at the Parademons.  Various images of the Justice League fighting the Parademons follow.

In the final scene, Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) geeks out over seeing the Bat Signal.  "Oh!  Awesome!" he says excitedly to Bruce before catching himself and speaking in a quieter tone.  "That's the Bat Signal!  That's your--Oh, Shhh!  Sorry, that's your signal that means we have to go now."

Bruce glances over at Barry with look of exasperation.  "Yeah, that's...that's what that means."

"It's so cool!" Barry replies with exuberance as Bruce looks over at Diana Prince for sympathy.

BLACK LIGHTNING Casts Jill Scott as Lady Eve

Are we going to see the rise of Kobra on Black Lightning?

Deadline has word that the upcoming CW series Black Lightning has cast Jill Scott as DC Comics supervillain Lady Eve.

According to the article, Lady Eve is described as "the bridge between Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III) and a secret group of corrupt leaders.  Always a consummate professional, Lady Eve presents herself in Freeland as the owner of a funeral parlor, but quickly becomes an adversary to Black Lightning."

"Jill is an amazing artist who can embody any character and give them an authentic voice that is both nuanced and richly complex," said showrunner and executive producer Salim Akil in a statement.  "I am excited to see her in the role of Lady Eve."

Scott, 45, is a singer, poet and actress, whose films include Why Did I Get Married?, Why Did I Get Married Too?, and Get on Up.  She voiced the role of Storm on the animated series Black Panther, and her television appearances include episodes of Fringe, Girlfriends, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Being Mary Jane.

Created in 1985 by Mike W. Barr and Alan Davis, Lady Eve first appeared in Batman and the Outsiders (vol.1) #24 as a member of the Kobra Cult, who joined Kobra on his secret plan to mind control high officials of the US Army and steal a satellite defense program to blackmail the United States Government.  She first met Kobra in Egypt, where she nursed him back to health.  With the promise of a better life, Eve was convinced to join him and together, they traveled to America, where they set their plan in motion.  They were eventually stopped by the Outsiders.

In the current DC Comics continuity, Lady Eve recently assisted Kobra in a major assault on the small country of Markovia.  She came into conflict with the superhero Katana, who had crash-landed in Markovia and was looking for an astrophysicist named Dr. Helga Jace.  The two dueled almost to a standstill, until a child distracted Katana, allowing Lady Eve to gain the upper hand and escape with Dr Jace.

Black Lightning is expected to debut on The CW sometime in early 2018.

Paramount Network Developing Image Comics' VELVET as TV Series

The World's Greatest Secret Secretary is about to arrive on the small screen.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the Paramount Network (rebranding from Spike TV) is developing the Image Comics espionage series Velvet as a drama series.  The series is the first original from Paramount Television for corporate sibling Paramount Network.

According to the article, Velvet is described as "a female-driven spy thriller that revolves around former spy Velvet as she sets out to settle an ancient score built on lies in a new world of ongoing espionage."

Kyle Killen will provide the script and executive produce the series as part of his overall deal with Paramount Television.  Keith Redmon and Steve Golin of Anonymous Content, which recently renewed its overall pact with Paramount Television, will also serve as executive producers.  Scott Pennington, who oversees Killen's Chapter Eleven banner, and Velvet co-creator Ed Brubaker will also be executive producers, while co-creator Steve Epting will be a producer.


"It's in the world of Wonder Woman and cast right and with the right pedigree," said Paramount Network (TV Land and CMT) president Kevin Kay in an interview with THR.  "It's a big idea and we think Kyle is great."

Created in 2013 by Brubaker and Epting, Velvet ran for 15 issues consisting of three story arcs.  Set in 1973, Velvet Templeton, the personal assistant to the Director of ARC-7, worked for an MI6-like intelligence organization so good most of their competition had never even heard of them.  After learning that ARC-7’s best agent, Jeff Keller, a.k.a. Agent X-14, had been killed in Paris, Velvet decided to investigate the murder herself, despite the fact that she hadn’t been an active field agent in years.  During her investigation, she became the suspected killer and was forced to go undercover to solve the mystery while avoiding the team from ARC-7 that was hunting her.
