MGM Options J. Michael Straczynski's RISING STARS for Movie

Well, isn't that Special.

Deadline reported yesterday that MGM has optioned Rising Stars, the Top Cow/Image Comics superhero drama series that was created by J. Michael Straczynski. Straczynski will provide the script, and Alex Gartner and Richard Suckle will produce the film for Atlas Entertainment.

Straczynski is best known as the creator and showrunner of the science fiction TV series Babylon 5, the spinoff series Crusade, and Jeremiah.  Recently, he wrote and executive produced the Netflix series Sense8 with Lily and Lana Wachowski.  His film scripts include Thor, World War Z and Underworld Awakening.  In addition to Rising Stars, his comic book work includes The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, Midnight Nation, Dream Police, Supreme Power, Strange, Superman, Wonder Woman, Before Watchmen, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer: Requiem, Sidekick, and The Twelve.

Running from 1999 to 2005, Rising Stars was 25-issue limited series about 113 people (called "Specials"), who were born with special abilities following the appearance of a mysterious comet in the sky above Pederson, Illinois.  The series explored how society may react to the advent of superpowers, and how those who are Specials may react towards society and each other.

The story is narrated from the future by the last living Special, John Simon, nicknamed "Poet," and starts when the Specials are all grown up, but it constantly flashes back to when they were children.  Through these flashbacks, the development of these 113 Specials is shown, starting with the government's monitoring and handling of the events, to the manifestation of their powers, to the impact of these abilities on the afflicted children and the world around them.  Some of the Specials use their powers for the good of the world, others for personal benefit and fame, while others simply wish to forget about them and live a normal life.

The comic came to an unexpected halt after issue 21 due to internal arguments between Straczynski and Top Cow.  Straczynski claimed he was cut out of the loop on the potential Rising Stars movie.  After communication broke down between them, he held back the scripts for the last three issues, and the entire comic was put on hold.  In addition to an apology for the way Straczynski was treated in regard to the possible film, Top Cow relented by giving him the full rights to an anthology comic he had written for them, Dream Police (later published by Marvel Comics), as well as the rights to the name and logo for the Joe's Comics imprint.

Matt Lucas to Reprise Nardole for DOCTOR WHO Series 10

Yeah, like you saw this one coming.

The BBC has revealed that actor Matt Lucas will reprise his role of the bumbling Nardole for Doctor Who Series 10 in 2017, which begins filming next week in Cardiff, Wales.  Lucas will join stars Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor and Pearl Mackie as new companion Bill.

Nardole first appeared in the 2015 Christmas Special "The Husbands of River Song" as a member of the human colony of Mendorax Dellora, and an employee of River Song. Nardole was told to find the surgeon River Song needed to extract the Halassi Androvar from the head of King Hydroflax.  Unfortunately, Nardole found the Twelfth Doctor and brought him to River Song instead.

When River and the Doctor escaped Hydroflax’s ship with his head in a bag, Hydroflax’s mechanical body turned to Nardole for strategic information.  Although Nardole claimed to know little of River’s plans, there was only one way for Hydroflax’s body to be sure, so it removed Nardole’s head and attached it to its own.

After the crash of the Harmony and Redemption on Darillium, Hydroflax's body was recovered from the wreckage.  As the hostile onboard computer was destroyed by the Doctor, Nardole and another head, Ramone, shared control of the body, working in a restaurant situated before the Singing Towers.  When River arrived several years after the crash, Ramone was in control as Nardole was getting some "me time" inside the body, something he admitted was hard when he greeted River from inside Hydroflax's body.

"I’m chuffed to bits that Nardole is returning to the TARDIS for some more adventures," said Lucas.  "I loved acting with Peter and I’m excited to work with Pearl."

"Delighted and slightly amazed to be welcoming Matt Lucas back on to the TARDIS," added Doctor Who showrunner and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, "and this time, it’s not just for Christmas, he’s sticking around.  One of the greatest comedy talents on planet Earth is being unleashed on all of time and space."

The opening episode of Series 10 is written by Moffat, executive produced by Brian Minchin, produced by Peter Bennett, and directed by Lawrence Gough.  The second episode in the new series is written by Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who previously wrote the Series 8 episode "In the Forest of the Night."  Block 2 writers are Sarah Dollard (writer of "Face the Raven") and Mike Bartlett (Doctor Foster).

In addition, Stephanie Hyam will play a guest cast role in the new series.  She previously played Lily Clarke in Jekyll & Hyde, and appeared in Peaky Blinders, Murdered by My Boyfriend, and Sherlock.

Doctor Who returns at Christmas, followed by Series 10 in 2017.

Marvel/Icon Series SCARLET in Development at Cinemax

The revolution will indeed be televised.  Specifically, on Cinemax.

Deadline is reporting that the Marvel/Icon comic book series Scarlet is in development at Cinemax.  Scarlet co-creator Brian Michael Bendis announced the news today while speaking at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas.  Although Bendis stated that the property is being developed for HBO, Deadline confirmed that the project is actually for HBO sibling Cinemax.

"I do a book called Scarlet, which is soon to be announced also in our universe of television," said Bendis.  "Not announced yet, but HBO."  Bendis added that the project is "at the earliest stage," but also stated "the team around it…will be announced as soon as all are on the same page."

Bendis continued, "Scarlet is a list of things you can’t get made.  Here’s a female lead who’s killing cops because her world is broken."  He added, "when it was sold, it was sold to people who were actively looking for that, so that put us in a good place.  So stay tuned."

This will be the third Bendis comic series adapted for television, after the Marvel/Icon series Powers for Sony Playstation, and Jessica Jones, the Netflix series based on Bendis' Marvel MAX imprint series Alias.

Created in 2010 by Bendis and co-creator Alex Maleev, Scarlet is about a young woman named Scarlet Rue from Portland, Oregon, who rebels against a corrupt society following the death of her boyfriend at the hands of police and ends up starting a new American revolution in the process.  The series often breaks the fourth wall, with Scarlet talking directly to the reader as she explains various details.  To date, only ten issues of the comic have been published, with no additional issues currently scheduled.

SUPERGIRL Season 2 Adds Lena Luthor, Maggie Sawyer & More

Some new faces are coming to National City.

TVLine has word that the CBS CW series Supergirl is adding five new characters for the show's upcoming second season, including two new series regulars.

The first new series regular is Lena Luthor, the younger sister of Superman's arch-enemy Lex Luthor, who will be cast in the 25-35 year old range and "arrives in town to get out from under the shadow of her infamous brother. She’s described as sexy and smart and determined to get what she wants. But what does she want? That remains unclear." Created in 1961 by Jerry Siegel and Kurt Schaffenberger, Lena first appeared in Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane #23.

The other new regular is Nick Farrow, a "brash leading man who butts heads with Kara at CatCo.  The son of a famous reporter, Nick is looking to make a name for himself in the news world but the question of whether he can leave behind his former selfish and hedonistic ways will constantly arise. In hanging out with Kara, the hero in Nick might finally come out."  Farrow appears to be a new character created for the show.

Three recurring characters include Maggie Sawyer, who is described in the article as "an out and proud detective for the newly formed Science Police, which deals specifically with metahuman and alien threats."  Created in 1987 by John Byrne, Maggie Sawyer first appeared in Superman (vol.2) #4 as the head of the Metropolis Special Crimes Unit.

Snapper Carr is described as "a veteran journalist appointed by Cat to remake the news division by going old school (not to be confused with the Justice League sidekick)."  Created in 1960 by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky, Lucas "Snapper" Carr first appeared in The Brave and the Bold (vol.1) #28 as a teenager who helps the Justice League defeat the giant alien starfish Starro and becomes their sidekick.

The final recurring character is called "The Doctor, the diabolical female leader of Project Cadmus who uses her surgical skills to implant prisoners with alien technology" and is speculated in the article as Serling Roquette.  My own speculation is that she's Amanda Spence, the daughter of Paul Westfield, a former Director of Project Cadmus.  Created in 1996 by Ron Marz and Ramon Bernado, Amanda Spence first appeared in Superboy (vol.4) #32 as a a field operative for the Agenda.  She was tasked by the Directors with capturing Superboy, part of a plot to clone the teen superhero.

Supergirl will return for Season 2 this fall on The CW.

LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Adds Vixen as Series Regular, HOWEVER...

Some good news and bad news for Vixen fans.

TV Insider revealed yesterday that the CW series Legends of Tomorrow is adding a new team member to replace Hawkgirl in Season 2, one that previously appeared in the series Arrow.

According to the article, the DC Comics superhero Vixen will be added to the cast as a series regular, BUT the character will not be reprised by Megalyn E.K., who played Vixen in the Arrow Season 4 episode "Taken" after voicing the character in an animated Vixen web series for CW Seed.

Unfortunately, the actress has become unavailable to reprise the role due to some possible upcoming film projects.  E.K. filmed A&E's Damien this past spring and is already working in Atlanta on the sorority comedy Step Sisters with The Middle's Eden Sher and How to Get Away With Murder's Matt McGorry.

She will, however, continue to voice Vixen for the web series' second season, and she could potentially guest-star as Vixen in any of the CW DC Comics shows if her scheduling frees up at some point.

The article also claims that "instead of recasting the fan favorite, the show instead plans to introduce a new Vixen who will actually be an old Vixen. Yep, thanks to Rip Hunter's affinity for time-travel, we're going to meet an earlier version of the character who may or may not share some sort of historical tie to Miss McCabe."

Created in 1981 by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner, Vixen first appeared in Action Comics (vol.1) #521 as Mari Jiwe McCabe, a young woman who grew up in a small African village in the fictional nation of Zambesi, M'Changa province.  Mari heard the legend of the "Tantu Totem" from her mother, but sometime later, Mari's mother was killed by poachers and she was raised by her father Reverend Richard Jiwe, the village priest.  Reverend Jiwe himself was killed by his half-brother (Mari's uncle) General Maksai.  Maksai wanted the Tantu Totem, which Jiwe had possessed.  Mari ultimately moved to America, where she established an identity as Mari McCabe and got a job as a model in New York City.  She used her newfound wealth to travel the world.  On a trip back to Africa, she came across her uncle and took back the Tantu Totem, using its power to become the costumed superhero Vixen.

Legends of Tomorrow returns to The CW for Season 2 sometime this fall.

DAMN Good Comics -- DC UNIVERSE: REBIRTH #1

Fair warning, there will be spoilers here, even though just about every comics news site already spoiled this issue a week ago.

Almost five years ago, DC Comics rebooted their fictional universe as "The New 52," which featured a few successes with Batman, Justice League and Harley Quinn, but largely was considered a creative disappointment.  DC's legendary heroes of hope and optimism were replaced by younger, grimdark versions that lacked the essential charm and appeal of their pre-Flashpoint incarnations, and declining sales soon reflected that.

So at long last, DC is taking major steps to address their mistakes without completely hitting the shiny, candy-like reset button, and who better to set the tone for this "DC Rebirth" than DC's Chief Creative Officer, Geoff Johns?  Ever since his days writing JSA and The Flash, one of Johns' greatest strengths as a mainstream comics writer has been his ability to zero in on what fans once enjoyed about DC characters and incorporate that into modern storytelling.  Sometimes that comes off as personal self-indulgence or fan service, but for the most part, Johns is great at getting readers to remember why they love comics.

And that's exactly what he does with DC Universe: Rebirth #1.  Armed with some outstanding art from Gary Frank, Ethan Van Sciver, Ivan Reis and Phil Jimenez, Johns frames the entire issue around the return of none other than Wally West -- the original green-eyed redhead who many still consider to be their Flash instead of Barry Allen.  DC fans (including myself) were upset when Wally was erased from the DC Universe with The New 52, only to eventually be reintroduced in The Flash Annual #3 as a younger, biracial version that wasn't The Flash anymore, wasn't married to Linda Park, and bore little resemblance to the character we loved.

Johns makes some important statements with Wally's return, primarily that the post-Flashpoint DCU has been missing something, that sense of legacy where a new generation takes over while honoring what came before.  As Wally struggles to return from the Speed Force, we take a tour of the reborn DCU to give readers and jaded DC fans a taste of the greatness to come.  Ryan Choi is tasked with suiting up as The Atom to find a microscopic Ray Palmer, current Blue Beetle Jaime Reyes is working with Ted Kord, Green Arrow and Black Canary are being pulled together once again, Aquaman proposes to Mera, senile old Johnny Thunder is tasked with finding the Justice Society, Dream Girl teases the return of the Legion of Super-Heroes, and Pandora (an early symbol for The New 52) is murdered for our mutual satisfaction.  And then we get a final payoff, with references to classic Flash imagery, as Wally makes a connection with his mentor Barry Allen and the two share a heartbreaking scene where Barry apologizes to Wally for forgetting him.

Wally realizes that someone out there in the DCU has stolen ten years from them, apparently to make them inexperienced and weaker for some reason yet to be revealed. That someone, which should piss writer Alan Moore off to no end, appears to be Doctor Manhattan from the classic 12-issue series Watchmen.  Now, we don't actually see Dr. Manhattan in this issue, possibly an important point, but we have a character speaking with his traditional blue Watchmen caption font with some imagery and a "The clock in the DC Universe is ticking down" tease clearly meant to imply the character.

So with all this in mind, I have to wonder, is this mysterious Big Bad really Dr. Manhattan or actually someone else?  Dr. Manhattan certainly has the power to pull off these continuity shenanigans, but as we all know, Watchmen wasn't intended to be set in the DC Universe. Bringing Dr. Manhattan into the DCU would be bold, sure, and makes great commentary against Watchmen, which introduced Grimdark storytelling along with Frank Miller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns back in the '80s.  Wouldn't it be even bolder if we're meant to think that Dr. Manhattan is the Big Bad?  What if it turns out to be someone like the Time Trapper instead...?

Obviously, To Be Continued.  In the meantime, though, the DC Universe is reborn once again and let's just appreciate that, especially since it happened on the same day that Marvel Comics alienated a good chunk of their fanbase by making Captain America a Hydra agent.  If you're a longtime DC Comics fan that felt burned, bitter and betrayed by The New 52, please give this issue a chance and see what you think.  I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

At the CBS Upfront presentation at Carnegie Hall in New York, CBS Studios released the first teaser trailer and logo for the 2017 revival of Star Trek, which will premiere on CBS before moving exclusively on digital platform CBS All Access.

The 50-second teaser is little more than rocketing through space with a Voiceover Guy, who simply says "CBS presents...a new adventure" as we spiral through the universe before coming across the familiar Starfleet logo.  And then, we're promised...

NEW CREWS (Crews, plural?)
NEW VILLAINS
NEW HEROES
NEW WORLDS

So...something new, then.

The new series will reportedly be set between the final film featuring the original cast, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, and Star Trek: The Next Generation's pilot episode "Encounter at Farpoint."  Bryan Fuller will serve as showrunner, while Nicholas Meyer, writer and director of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI, will be a writer and executive producer for the series.
