Andrew Lincoln to Continue as Rick Grimes in THE WALKING DEAD Movie Series

Relax, Rick Grimes fans...Rick is still walking and isn't dead.

Deadline has reported that actor Andrew Lincoln will continue playing Rick Grimes, his leading character on the AMC series The Walking Dead, in a series of AMC Studios original films, written by Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple.  The films are planned to continue the story of Rick Grimes, with the first expected to begin production as early as 2019.

After playing Rick Grimes for eight seasons on The Walking Dead, Lincoln made his final TV appearance as Rick in "What Comes After", which was written by Matthew Negrate and Gimple.  In the episode, Rick Grimes was mortally wounded and was last seen being flown away by helicopter to an unknown destination.  According to the article, the first film will "explore the story of where Rick is taken and what he faces in a new corner of the zombie apocalypse."

On the Talking Dead aftershow, Lincoln remarked, "It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning.  And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista.  And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world.  I want to know the meta of it all.  And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition…Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story."

The article also states that the Rick Grimes movie series is just one of a series of projects in development from Gimple as part of a multi-year plan for The Walking Dead Universe, which also includes additional films, specials, series, digital content and more.  According to Gimple, the former showrunner of The Walking Dead who was made Chief Content Officer for the brand in January, some stories will relate to what we know about The Walking Dead, while others will be standalone stories in new creative territory.

"We have a lot on the horizon – starting with a new epic featuring one of the greatest leading actors in television history and one of the best people I’ve ever met," said Gimple.  "These films are going to be big evolutions of what we’ve been doing on the show, with the scope and scale of features.  We’re starting with the first part of the continuing story of Rick Grimes, and there is much more on the way, featuring yet-unseen worlds of The Walking Dead and faces from the show’s past, as well as new characters we hope to become favorites, told by TWD veterans and emerging voices.  We want to break new ground with different, distinct stories, all part of the same world that’s captured our imagination for nearly a decade of the Dead."

The Walking Dead airs Sunday nights on AMC at 9 p.m. EST.

Andrew Lincoln to Leave THE WALKING DEAD in Season 9

Is it finally time for The Walking Dead to die?

Collider shocked fans of AMC's zombie apocalypse drama The Walking Dead earlier today by revealing that star Andrew Lincoln, who has played the show's protagonist Rick Grimes since its inception, will be leaving six episodes into Season 9.

Rick's replacement as the group's leader?  None other than everyone's favorite bad boy with a crossbow, Daryl Dixon.  The article states that "AMC has offered substantial compensation to long-running series star Norman Reedus to not only stay on board, but to take over the show’s leading role."

As a zombie drama, the show regularly has characters replaced with new ones, typically by killing them off in some shocking way, so change isn't unheard of.  However, following the recent death of Chandler Riggs' character Carl Grimes, and Lennie James' character Morgan Jones moving over to the spinoff series Fear the Walking Dead, fans of TWD may be reluctant to accept the loss of another longtime favorite.

And if that wasn't enough transition for the show, the upcoming exit of Lauren Cohan as Maggie Rhee probably won't make things any easier.  After a public stand for a better contract to appear in Season 9, Cohan will only appear in six episodes as well after her new series Whiskey Cavalier was picked up by ABC.

As a result, only Daryl and Melissa McBride's character Carol Peletier will be the only remaining characters from The Walking Dead's first season.

The Walking Dead is expected to return to AMC for Season 9 sometime in October 2018.

THE WALKING DEAD Gets Season 9 with New Showrunner Angela Kang

The Walking Dead refuses to die.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that the AMC series The Walking Dead has been renewed by the cable network for a ninth season.  Writer/co-executive producer Angela Kang has been promoted to executive producer and showrunner, replacing Scott M. Gimple, who will now serve as chief content officer and oversee both The Walking Dead and spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, as well as gaming and future brand extensions on multiple platforms.  Kang becomes the fourth showrunner on The Walking Dead, after Frank Darabont, Glen Mazzara and Gimple.

The move follows the controversial decision by Gimple to fire Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl Grimes, and a signficant drop in ratings, which saw the midseason finale viewing drop from 10.58 million in Season 7 to 7.89 million in Season 8.  A Change.org petition for Gimple to be fired as showrunner has currently reached over 82,000 signatures.

"The Walking Dead is a special show which started in an entirely different era of TV," remarked Gimple, "and continues, in this new era, to confidently take chances to tell compelling stories that excite audiences and make them deeply connect with its characters, adapting Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic book.  As the show closes in on its tenth year, I’m honored to keep working with the talented, dedicated people behind and in front of the camera to make it all it can be, while expanding the world of The Walking Dead with new narratives like Fear the Walking Dead and a whole host of truly cool stories ahead.  Angela is a big part of the heart and soul of The Walking Dead, and I’m thrilled to help facilitate her vision of the show’s next era."

"I am beyond thrilled to be stepping into this new role with The Walking Dead," said Kang.  "Working on this series and having the opportunity to adapt Robert Kirkman’s amazing comic has been a fangirl dream come true for me.  I’m excited to continue working with Scott and the wonderfully supportive folks at AMC, and can’t wait to share the next chapter of the story with our fans next fall."

"This is an enormously important day for the entire The Walking Dead television universe," said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios.  "We are proud to acknowledge Angela’s significant contribution to the series and to set a clear path forward for a ninth season under her direction.  Further, with gratitude and admiration, we also recognize Scott’s broad impact on, and leadership of, the content that fuels our TWD universe.  Together, we will dream bigger and more broadly than ever before.  I know I speak for Angela, Scott and everyone at AMC when I say thanks most of all to the fans and the many talented people who have helped AMC play Dead."

According to the article, Gimple's deal comes after he added oversight of Fear the Walking Dead.  Created by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman and Dave Erickson, Fear saw Erickson leave as showrunner at the end of Season 3.  Andrew Chambliss and Ian Goldberg will take over as showrunners on Fear and report to Gimple,  Keeping Gimple in-house at AMC Studios became increasingly important after Kirkman chose to move his overall deal from AMC to Amazon.

The Walking Dead returns to AMC for the second half of Season 8 on February 25th.

THE FANDOM ZONE 124: "Crisis on Earth-X" is Up!

"My entire life has been marked by two things.  The first one is change.  From when I was a kid to when I was an adult, things were always changing.  But no matter how different things became or what new challenges I had to face, I always had the other thing in my life was marked by, and that's you.  You've always been there. As a friend, as a partner. As the love of my life. You're my home, Iris.  And that's one thing that will never change."

"That was really nice.  When I was nine years old, I wanted to be a ballerina, remember? Even though I was not a very good dancer.  And the day of the recital, I froze.  I couldn't move, and I wanted to die.  Then I looked in the audience and I saw you.  And you got up and you climbed on the stage and you did that whole routine with me.  We killed it.  I mean, we bought the house...down.  And from that moment, I knew that, with you by my side, anything was possible.  The Flash may be the city's hero, but you, Barry Allen...you're my hero.  And I am happy, excited, and honored to be your wife."
