WATCHMEN Leads 2020 Emmy Nominations with 26

Who watches the Watchmen?  Emmy nomination voters, apparently.

Variety has details on HBO's limited series Watchmen, based on the classic DC Comics maxi-series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, leading the nominations for the 2020 Emmy Awards with 26 total, including acting nominations for Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jean Smart, Louis Gossett Jr., and Jovan Adepo. 

The Disney Plus series The Mandalorian earned an impressive 15 nominations for its first season, while HBO's Westworld picked up 11 nominations.  Netflix's Stranger Things and the FX supernatural comedy What We Do in the Shadows both earned 8 nominations, while CBS All Access' Star Trek: Picard earned 5 nominations.

Other recognized geek-favorite shows include Amazon Prime's Carnival Row and The Boys, Fox's The Simpsons, Adult Swim's Rick and Morty, and Netflix's The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Lost in Space and Mindhunter.

The 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards is scheduled to air Sunday, September 20th on ABC.

GAME OF THRONES Leads 2019 Emmy Nominations with Record of 32

The Game is over, but the long night of the Emmy Awards remains.

Deadline has details on the final season of HBO's Game of Thrones setting a new record total of 32 nominations for the 2019 Emmy Awards, an increase of 10 from last year, including acting nominations for Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams, Gwendoline Christie, and Carice van Houten.

FX's American Horror Story: Apocalypse earned 5 nominations, while CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery beamed up 4 for its second season.  Two Amazon Prime Video series, Good Omens and The Man in the High Castle, followed with 3 each.

GAME OF THRONES Leads 2018 Emmy Nominations with 22

When you play against Game of Thrones, you win or you die.

After sitting out last year, HBO's Game of Thrones returned as strong as ever, leading with a total of 22 nominations for the 2018 Emmy Awards, including acting nominations for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Dame Diana Rigg.

HBO's science fiction western thriller Westworld followed right behind with 21, including acting nominations for Ed Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, and Jimmi Simpson.

Netflix's fan-favorite series Stranger Things was down from last year, with 12 for its second season and more acting nominations for David Harbour and Millie Bobby Brown.

Showtime's revival of Twin Peaks was shut out of the major categories for some inexplicable reason, but earned 9 nominations, including co-creators Mark Frost and David Lynch.  Netflix's sci-fi anthology Black Mirror earned 8 nominations, while FX's American Horror Story: Cult earned 7 nominations.

Other recognized geek-favorite shows include USA Network's Mr. Robot, Disney XD's Star Wars Rebels, Netflix's Altered Carbon, Cartoon Network's Rick and Morty, Fox's The Simpsons, and CBS All Access' Star Trek: Discovery.

In addition to Kyle MacLachlan being snubbed for Twin Peaks, some notable oversights included FX's Legion and Netflix's Lost in Space, both of which only earned a single nomination.

Disney Acquires 21st Century Fox, FANTASTIC FOUR & X-MEN Returning to Marvel

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to get a lot bigger.

After recent acquisitions of Marvel Comics and Lucasfilm Ltd., The Walt Disney Company has officially announced they have agreed to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international businesses, for the sum of $52.4 billion in stock.

This means that Disney will now control the movie and TV rights to the Fantastic Four and X-Men properties, allowing them to be brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and interact with other MCU characters.  This deal includes other Fox franchises such as The Simpsons and Alien.

The Walt Disney Company and Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc. (21st Century Fox) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox, including the Twentieth Century Fox Film and Television studios, along with cable and international TV businesses, for approximately $52.4 billion in stock (subject to adjustment). Building on Disney’s commitment to deliver the highest quality branded entertainment, the acquisition of these complementary assets would allow Disney to create more appealing content, build more direct relationships with consumers around the world and deliver a more compelling entertainment experience to consumers wherever and however they choose. Immediately prior to the acquisition, 21st Century Fox will separate the Fox Broadcasting network and stations, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Network, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network into a newly listed company that will be spun off to its shareholders.

Under the terms of the agreement, shareholders of 21st Century Fox will receive 0.2745 Disney shares for each 21st Century Fox share they hold (subject to adjustment for certain tax liabilities as described below). The exchange ratio was set based on a 30-day volume weighted average price of Disney stock. Disney will also assume approximately $13.7 billion of net debt of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition price implies a total equity value of approximately $52.4 billion and a total transaction value of approximately $66.1 billion (in each case based on the stated exchange ratio assuming no adjustment) for the business to be acquired by Disney, which includes consolidated assets along with a number of equity investments. 

Popular Entertainment Properties to Join Disney Family

Combining with Disney are 21st Century Fox’s critically acclaimed film production businesses, including Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, which together offer diverse and compelling storytelling businesses and are the homes of Avatar, X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool, as well as The Grand Budapest Hotel, Hidden Figures, Gone Girl, The Shape of Water and The Martian—and its storied television creative units, Twentieth Century Fox Television, FX Productions and Fox21, which have brought The Americans, This Is Us, Modern Family, The Simpsons and so many more hit TV series to viewers across the globe. Disney will also acquire FX Networks, National Geographic Partners, Fox Sports Regional Networks, Fox Networks Group International, Star India and Fox’s interests in Hulu, Sky plc, Tata Sky and Endemol Shine Group.

At the request of both 21st Century Fox and the Disney Board of Directors, Mr. Iger has agreed to continue as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company through the end of calendar year 2021.

Benefits to Consumers

The acquisition will enable Disney to accelerate its use of innovative technologies, including its BAMTECH platform, to create more ways for its storytellers to entertain and connect directly with audiences while providing more choices for how they consume content. The complementary offerings of each company enhance Disney’s development of films, television programming and related products to provide consumers with a more enjoyable and immersive entertainment experience.

Bringing on board 21st Century Fox’s entertainment content and capabilities, along with its broad international footprint and a world-class team of managers and storytellers, will allow Disney to further its efforts to provide a more compelling entertainment experience through its direct-to-consumer (DTC) offerings. This transaction will enable Disney’s recently announced Disney and ESPN-branded DTC offerings, as well as Hulu, to create more appealing and engaging experiences, delivering content, entertainment and sports to consumers around the world wherever and however they want to enjoy it.

The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love. The addition of Avatar to its family of films also promises expanded opportunities for consumers to watch and experience storytelling within these extraordinary fantasy worlds. Already, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort can experience the magic of Pandora—The World of Avatar, a new land inspired by the Fox film franchise that opened earlier this year. And through the incredible storytelling of National Geographic—whose mission is to explore and protect our planet and inspire new generations through education initiatives and resources—Disney will be able to offer more ways than ever before to bring kids and families the world and all that is in it.

WESTWORLD Leads 2017 Emmy Nominations with 22

These violent delights have viable noms.

With Game of Thrones missing in action, HBO's science fiction western thriller Westworld filled the void nicely with a leading total of 22 nominations for the 2017 Emmy Awards, including acting nominations for Sir Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, and Thandie Newton.

Netflix's fan-favorite series Stranger Things was close behind with an impressive 19 for its first season, with acting nominations for David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, and Shannon Purser.  Justice for Barb, indeed.

FX's American Horror Story: Roanoke earned 4 nominations, as did USA's Mr. Robot, Showtime's Penny Dreadful, and BBC's Sherlock, all down from last year.

Other recognized geek-favorite shows include Fox's Gotham and The Simpsons, Starz's American Gods, FX's Archer, Comedy Central's South Park, AMC's The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Netflix's Luke Cage and Sense8. 

Some notable oversights include FX's Legion and Fox's Lucifer, both of which failed to earn a single nomination.

The 69th Primetime Emmy Awards is scheduled to air Sunday, September 17th on CBS.

GAME OF THRONES Leads 2016 Emmy Nominations with 23

Winter finally came...and so did the Emmy noms.

HBO's fantasy drama series Game of Thrones once again leads the pack with a total of 23 nominations for the 2016 Emmy Awards, including acting nominations for Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Maisie Williams.

Fan-favorite Tatiana Maslany finally received a long-overdue nomination for BBC America's Orphan Black, although that was the show's sole nomination.  Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones scored two nominations each, although Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter and David Tennant were sadly overlooked.

FX's American Horror Story earned 8 nominations, while USA's Mr. Robot, Showtime's Penny Dreadful, and BBC's Sherlock each earned 6 nominations.

Other recognized geek-favorite shows include Fox's Gotham, The Simpsons and Family Guy, FX's Archer, Comedy Central's South Park, AMC's The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, and NBC's Hannibal.

GAME OF THRONES Leads 2014 Emmy Nominations with 19

HBO's Game of Thrones leads the pack with a total of 19 nominations for the 2014 Emmy Awards, including acting nominations for Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Dame Diana Rigg.

The FX series American Horror Story: Coven followed with an impressive 17 nominations, and PBS' airing of Sherlock earned a surprising 12 nominations.

Other recognized geek-favorite shows include  Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, FX's Archer, Comedy Central's Futurama and South Park, Fox's The Simpsons, Sleepy Hollow, Almost Human and Family Guy, HBO's True Blood, BBC America's Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond, ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Once Upon a Time, AMC's The Walking Dead and NBC's Community, Grimm and Revolution.

AMERICAN HORROR STORY and GAME OF THRONES Lead Emmy Nominations

FX's American Horror Story: Asylum leads the pack with a total of 17 nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards, including acting nominations for Jessica Lange, James Cromwell, Zachary Quinto and Sarah Paulson.  Once again, the series was closely followed by HBO's Game of Thrones with 16.

THE SIMPSONS Could End This Season? Worst. News. Ever.

I know, there are plenty of reasons to hate the Fox network -- the cancellations of Firefly and Human Target, that asinine CGI robot they show during NFL football games, giving us Glee and American Idol -- but this could potentially jack up the hatred to another level entirely.

The Daily Beast reported earlier today that The Simpsons, the longest-running sitcom ever, may cease production after the current 23rd Season ends sometime in May 2012.  It seems there's another contract negotiation issue with the principal cast of six -- Dan Castellanetta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer -- only now the suits at Fox are insisting that if the cast doesn't accept a 45 percent pay cut, The Simpsons will officially be cancelled.

The ultimatum was given Monday night after Fox rejected the actors' proposal of taking a 30 percent pay cut in exchange for a small percentage of the show's back-end profits.  As you might imagine, with twenty-three years worth of syndication and merchandising, most of the billions of dollars made ends up going to Fox.  But hey, they're job creators, right?

The Daily Beast quotes a Unnamed Insider (whose real name is hopefully not Jeff Albertson) who says, "Fox is taking the position that unless they can cut the production costs really drastically, they’ll pull the plug on new shows.  The show has made billions in profits over the years and will continue to do so as far as the eye can see down the road.  The actors are willing to take a pay cut of roughly a third, but that’s not good enough for Fox."

So bottom line, unless the cast agrees to give up almost half their salary or some form of compromise is reached, Simpsons is probably done.  After twenty-three seasons and the show not pulling in peak numbers anymore, it doesn't seem like the cast has much in the way of leverage here.  Fox could easily go ahead with selling the show for a second round of syndication money, and with almost 500 episodes in play, it may be more profitable for them to finally end the series instead of giving the cast their proposed amount.

Let's hope things are worked out somehow, though.  I've been watching The Simpsons since their original shorts on The Tracy Ullman Show back in 1987 and can't imagine my Sunday nights without them.
