At the heart of DC UNIVERSE will be all-new exclusive original live-action and animated series based on DC’s iconic characters. Developed by Warner Bros. Television, Swamp Thing and Doom Patrol are scheduled to debut in 2019, following the dramatic, live-action adventure series Titans which premieres later this year. Warner Bros. Animation is also developing a slate of animated TV series based on existing fan favorites, including Harley Quinn and the highly anticipated third season of the popular Young Justice: Outsiders animated series which are both scheduled to debut in 2019.

Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise. Dick Grayson and Rachel Roth, a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness, get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and lovable Beast Boy. Together they become a surrogate family and team of heroes.

Doom Patrol is a reimagining of one of DC’s strangest group of outcasts: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and Crazy Jane. Banding together these rejects find themselves on a mission that will take them to the weirdest and most unexpected corners of the DC universe.

Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets. When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

Young Justice: Outsiders features the return of the fan favorite animated series with a huge cast of DC’s most iconic young superheroes – plus brand-new characters, many of whom are just discovering their unique meta-powers and special abilities. Set against the backdrop of a rich, deep world that touches all corners of the DC universe, the season focuses on meta–trafficking, and an intergalactic arms race for control of these super–powered youths.

Harley Quinn follows Harley’s adventures after she breaks up with the Joker and strikes out on her own in this new adult animated comedy. With the help of Poison Ivy and a ragtag crew of DC castoffs, Harley tries to earn a seat at the biggest table in villainy: the Legion of Doom.

Lost STAR TREK Data Recovered from Gene Roddenberry's Old Disks

And to think, all they needed to do was speak into the mouse...

TheWrap revealed yesterday that documents written by the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry were recovered from two hundred 5 1/4" floppy disks that belonged to him. DriveSavers and eDiscovery announced that after months of work, they were able to pull data from the disks that Roddenberry used to store information while working on Star Trek.

According to the article, Mike Cobb, DriveSavers' director of engineering, wouldn't reveal the contents of the disks, but said in a press release there were "Lots of documents" and "2016 just happens to be the 50th anniversary of the original ‘Star Trek,’ anything could happen, the world will have to wait and see."

During the original show's run from 1966 to 1969, Roddenberry created scripts for the science fiction series on a typewriter before using a pair of custom-built computers to record story ideas, scripts and notes.  Over time, the author moved on to work with more mainstream computers, but kept the custom-built pair in his possession.

Roddenberry passed in 1991, but it wasn’t until much later that his estate discovered nearly two hundred 5 1/4" floppy disks.  One of his custom-built computers had long since been auctioned and the remaining device was no longer functional.  The custom-built computers had also used custom-built operating systems and special word processing software that prevented any modern method of reading what was on the disks.

The article claims DriveSavers engineers were given the computer and the specially formatted floppy disks, then developed a method of extracting the data.  There was no user manual for the computer, nor was there any technical documentation to help guide them.  It apparently took over three months for the DriveSavers engineering team to develop software that could read the disks.  Even though the engineers were able to crack the unusual formatting, reading the nearly two hundred disks took the better part of a year to finish.

Paramount Pictures will release Star Trek Beyondthe latest entry in the rebooted Star Trek film franchise, on July 22, 2016.  Last November, CBS announced plans to launch a new Star Trek series on CBS All Access in 2017.

DAMN Good Television -- POWERS: "Pilot"

Back in the dark days of 2011, fans of the Powers comic book series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming were cautiously optimistic about a television series adaptation for FX starring Jason Patric, Lucy Punch and Charles S. Dutton.  However, the filmed pilot apparently didn't impress the suits at FX, with reshoots and recasting being discussed by the network.

Well, those plans must have quickly spiraled downward because not three years later, Sony announced that Powers would be the first original series on the PlayStation Network, streaming through consoles and episodes purchased on PlayStation.com.  The second attempt features Sharlto Copley as Christian Walker, Susan Heyward as Deena Pilgrim, Michelle Forbes as Retro Girl, Eddie Izzard as "Big Bad" Wolfe, Noah Taylor as Johnny Royale, Olesya Rulin as Calista and Logan Browning as Zora.

Sounds pretty decent, doesn't it?  And the premise of a cop procedural set in the world of superheroes has done well for the Fox series Gotham, which has already been renewed for a second season.  So, considering all of this, I really have to wonder why this series seems pretty much doomed to failure.

This first episode, written by Charlie Huston and directed by David Slade, tanks as an adaptation of the source material from the start, showing Walker, the former superhero known as Diamond until he was depowered, operating in bright, sunny Los Angeles instead of a dark, atmospheric city like Chicago or New York.  And with the seriously disappointing production values that make superhero fan films on YouTube look like HBO's Game of Thrones by comparison, this series looks and feels just like a typical USA network show that just happens to have some superpowered characters in it.

With a much thinner, less imposing body frame than his comics counterpart, Copley's Walker hides behind a pair of sunglasses and a beard while moping a number of times about his lost powers. We want to slowly discover what makes him tick, but instead get clumsy chunks of exposition thrown at us in the form of things like an Extra segment hosted by Mario Lopez.

As for Susan Heyward's Deena Pilgrim, she gets partnered with Walker about a third into the episode and fans of the comic series are in for another letdown.  Anyone looking for their favorite sassy and snarky spitfire is going to find a much more subdued, dialed back version that barely resembles the character.  Oh, there are moments when Walker and Pilgrim banter in a traditional manner, but they're far too few and fleeting.

Another significant divergence from the comic series is the initial mystery of the death of Olympia, an aging superhero, which is taken from the third story arc "Little Deaths."  It's not nearly as intriguing of a mystery as the initial "Who Killed Retro Girl?" arc, although the upside is we actually get to see Michelle Forbes as Retro Girl for a while until she presumably gets bumped off.

The second story arc, "Roleplay," is also teased somewhat with the various superhero wannabes and "powers kids" that hang out and party across L.A. just waiting to become famous.  One of the self-absorbed "powers kids" is Zora, who unfortunately becomes another misfire in this adaptation as her character is reduced from being a century-old badass superhero goddess to a vapid young adult wearing a Geordi LaForge visor and a horrible costume seemingly made out of shiny duct tape.

Sure, this is only the first episode of ten for the first season, but PlayStation's decision to make it free only works if viewers actually want to pay $1.99 for each following episode unless they already have a PlayStation Plus membership.  Something tells me that bootleg versions will be big for non-gamers, but honestly?  I recommend just reading the comics instead.

GLOBAL FREQUENCY Gets Pilot Commitment from Fox

Are you on the Global Frequency?

That's the question Fox may be asking you next fall after giving a pilot production commitment to a new television adaptation of Warren Ellis' DC Comics/WildStorm series Global Frequency.

According to Deadline, the show "will chronicle the workings of The Global Frequency, a privately funded crime-fighting operation that uses worldwide crowd-sourcing to solve crimes the police cannot."  Jerry Bruckheimer is executive producing the drama series along with Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Rockne S. O'Bannon and yes, Ellis himself.  O'Bannon, creator of Farscape and Defiance and writer for NBC's Constantine, will script the pilot.

Global Frequency will be the fourth Warner Bros./DC Comics property being developed for next season, after Supergirl, which has a series commitment at CBS, Titans, which is being developed for TNT, and Lucifer, which has a put pilot commitment at Fox.

Created in 2002 by Ellis and twelve different artists, Global Frequency was a twelve-issue science fiction limited series that explored the Global Frequency, an independent and covert intelligence organization headed up by the mysterious Miranda Zero, whose purpose is to keep the world safe from secret government projects unknown to the general public.

This will be the second television pilot based on the property.  In 2005, Survivor executive producer Mark Barnett developed a Global Frequency television series with Michelle Forbes as Miranda Zero, Josh Hopkins as Sean Flynn, Jenni Baird as Dr. Katrina Finch and Aimee Garcia as Aleph.  The characters of Sean Flynn, an ex-policeman who accidentally stumbled on a Global Frequency mission and Katrina Finch, a brilliant scientist with expertise in multiple fields, were created specifically for the series.

Unlike Ellis' comic book series, which had an ever-changing cast of field agents, Flynn and Finch were to be regulars along with Zero and Aleph, with other Frequency members coming in as and when necessary in supporting roles.  This would allow for the character continuity expected of a television series and yet allow other characters to be killed off as in the comic book.

Another script was in development for The CW in 2009, but the project failed to go to pilot.

Based on the acclaimed novel, Iron Knight, Silver Vase, by Wang Dulu (book 5 in the Crane-Iron Pentalogy) and written by John Fusco (Marco Polo) the new film is produced by Harvey Weinstein (Academy Award winner – The King’s Speech, The Artist) and Peter Berg (Emmy Award winner – Friday Night Lights; Lone Survivor, Hancock) and Sarah Aubrey (Friday Night Lights; Lone Survivor, Hancock) and executive produced by Morten Tyldum (Headhunters, The Imitation Game), Ralph Winter (X-Men franchise), Anthony Wong, and Bey Logan (The Medallion).

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend also stars Harry Shum Jr (Glee, Revenge of the Green Dragons), Jason Scott Lee (Seventh Son, Hawaii Five-O), Roger Yuan (Bulletproof Monk), Eugenia Yuan (Revenge of the Green Dragons) and newcomer Natasha Liu Bordizzo.

Principal photography is now underway in New Zealand. The film’s director of photography is Tom Sigel (Drive, X-Men: Days of Future Past) and design is led by the Academy Award®-winning Lord of the Rings team of costume designer Ngila Dickson, production designer Grant Major and visual effects supervisor Mark Stetson.

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE: Episode 002.5 - "DragonConfire" is Up!

"Welcome to the most dangerous place in the universe."

After a slight delay due to our editor Rob Southgate being without power this past weekend along with 100,000 in the Chicago area, we're back with another episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast.

At long last, Jesse Jackson gives his thoughts on "Into the Dalek," the second episode from Doctor Who Series Eight, and shares his experiences at Dragon Con 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia.  In addition, we digress into things like the TV series Arrow and The Flash, Dragon Con's screening of "Into the Dalek," the greatness of Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, listener email, our ranking on iTunes' TV & Film podcast chart, and more!

And for those who aren't aware yet, we are available on iTunes RIGHT HERE as well as Stitcher RIGHT HERE, so please subscribe and tell your friends about us.  Oh, and don't forget we have an officially official Next Stop Everywhere Facebook page and Twitter account, so be sure to Like and/or Follow us, okay?

Oh, and check back later this week for Episode 003 with our take on "Robot of Sherwood," then be sure to watch "Listen" on BBC America this Saturday, and then keep checking iTunes, Stitcher and the Southgate Media Group website for our next review!

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE: Episode 002 - "Into the Dalek" is Up!

"Yeah, she's my carer.  She cares so I don't have to."

Yes, we're back with another episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast, but with a special twist this time.  You see, our regular co-host Jesse Jackson was off living the good life at Dragon Con this past weekend, so we asked the lovely Karen Lindsay to fill in so you weren't stuck with listening to only my nonsense for sixty minutes.

In this review of "Into the Dalek," the second episode from Doctor Who Series Eight that aired this past Saturday, Karen and I share our thoughts about the episode written by Phil Ford and Steven Moffat.  We'll cover things like the new character (and probable future companion) Danny Pink, the Doctor's hatred of the Daleks and his dislike of soldiers, more of the mysterious "Missy," our Reverse the Polarity segment, listener email, and more!

And for those who aren't aware yet, we are now available on iTunes RIGHT HERE as well as Stitcher RIGHT HERE, so please subscribe and tell your friends about us.  Oh, and don't forget we have an officially official Next Stop Everywhere Facebook page and Twitter account, so be sure to Like and/or Follow us, okay?

NEXT STOP EVERYWHERE: Episode 001 - "Deep Breath" is Up!

"Look at the eyebrows...These are attack eyebrows!  You could take bottle tops off with these!"

Jesse Jackson and yours truly are back once again with our third episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast, which we are of course treating as Episode 1 just because we can.  In this review of "Deep Breath," the first episode from Doctor Who Series Eight that aired this past Saturday, Jesse and I share our thoughts about the episode and try our very best to entertain you while not saying something completely stupid in the process.  (That last bit's usually on me...)

We'll cover things like the new opening credits and theme arrangement, the Scotification (is that even a word?) of Doctor Who, Clara Oswald stepping her game up, who that mysterious Scary Poppins woman calling herself "Missy" might be, some lovely reviews of the podcast posted on iTunes, and more!

Yes, for those who have been wondering, we are finally available on iTunes RIGHT HERE, so please subscribe and tell your friends.  Oh, and don't forget we have an officially official Next Stop Everywhere Facebook page and Twitter account, so be sure to Like and/or Follow us, okay?

Clara, be our pal and tell us...Are we good men?

Jesse Jackson and yours truly are back once again with our second episode of Next Stop Everywhere: The Doctor Who Podcast, which we are of course treating as Episode 1/2.  In this second warmup podcast before the Doctor Who Series Eight premiere on Saturday, Jesse and I cover a number of subjects to get you ready for the 34th season of the world's longest-running science fiction television series.

Starting with the new Doctor Who specials on BBC America, we also cover how to plan your Doctor Who viewing party and how to prepare yourself for a new, new Doctor.  We also answer some listener e-mail and talk about our new officially official Next Stop Everywhere Facebook page and Twitter account.  Don't forget to Like and/or Follow us, okay?
