First SWAMP THING Trailer Teases The Floronic Man & Blue Devil

Get ready for a case of Swamp fever.

DC Universe has released the first trailer its upcoming TV series Swamp Thing, based on the DC Comics elemental creature.  The one-minute, 25-second trailer gives us our first good look at the new series, emphasizing horror along with teasing other DC characters such as the Floronic Man and Blue Devil.

The trailer opens in Houma, Louisiana, with some men in a small motorboat traveling the swamps at night, only to stop and presumably have a confrontation with Swamp Thing.

Next, we see a young girl lying on the floor of a classroom with nose bleeding.  This is followed by a disturbing image of a man stabbing someone and the young girl screaming.

We cut to some sort of examination room, where Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) is blissfully unaware that the body she's examining has come back to life as some sort of plant creature with growing vines.  The creature lashes out with vines and grabs Abby as her assistant Harlan Edwards (Leonardo Nam) looks on helplessly.

We then see Lucilia Cable (Jennifer Beals), the sheriff of Marais, aim her flashlight at Alec Holland (Andy Bean), followed by a young woman drowning underwater.

Maria Sunderland (Virginia Madsen) is shown being visibly upset at someone and pointing at them, which is followed by a man wearing a pig mask and wielding a hatchet.

We get a quick glimpse of Ian Ziering as Daniel Cassidy, who opens a drawer that reveals his Blue Devil mask and costume, followed by Jason Woodrue (Kevin Durand), the future Floronic Man, examining the plant creature.

In the final scene, Abby apparently gets stranded in the swamp, leading to her encounter with Swamp Thing as he emerges from the water and crawls towards her in a monster movie-like fashion.

SWAMP THING Production Halted at 10 Episodes, Warner Bros. Evaluating Future of DC Universe Service

Warner Bros. is draining the swamp.

The Wilmington Star-News is reporting that the upcoming DC Universe series Swamp Thing, based on the DC Comics character, is wrapping production earlier than expected as Warner Bros. "evaluates the future of its DC Universe streaming service."

According to the article, local crew members were notified Tuesday night that the project would wrap production on Episode 10, and then stop as writers and producers rewrite the finale.  The series was originally scheduled to film 13 episodes through May.  In addition, several more days of reshoots for previously filmed episodes are expected.

Intending to have multiple seasons, the Swamp Thing series reportedly made significant investments in the Wilmington region, estimating to spend around $85 million locally on its entire first season, according to film grant applications filed with the state.  The production occupies multiple sound stages and offices on the EUE/Screen Gems Studios lot, and built a massive swamp set on Stage 10, which houses a water tank for filming.

Swamp Thing stars Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane, a scientist who returns home to Houma, Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, only to develop a bond with scientist Alec Holland (Andy Bean), who will be transformed into the elemental hero, Swamp Thing (Derek Mears).  The series also stars Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Beals, Will Patton, Ian Ziering, Henderson Wade, and Kevin Durand.

The news puts the future of the show in doubt, as well as the future of the DC Universe streaming service.  DC Universe launched just seven months ago on September 15, 2018 and has featured the live action series Titans and Doom Patrol, along with the animated series Young Justice: Outsiders.  Young Justice: Outsiders is slated to return for the second half of its season on July 2nd, with the Harley Quinn animated series scheduled for October, and Stargirl, originally planned for 2019, pushed back to 2020.

After the recent Disney+ streaming service announcement offered at only $6.99 per month, Warner Bros. could potentially fold DC Universe into the planned WarnerMedia streaming service as a way to compete with Disney.  WarnerMedia is expected to launch in late 2019, and could feature the DC Universe content similar to how Disney+ will feature Marvel Studios content.

In the meantime, Swamp Thing is currently scheduled to debut on DC Universe on May 31st.

SWAMP THING Casts Ian Ziering as Blue Devil

Swamp Thing is about to encounter a weirdness magnet.

Deadline reported that the upcoming DC Universe series Swamp Thing, based on the DC Comics humanoid plant elemental, has cast Ian Ziering as Daniel Cassidy, better known to DC Comics fans as the superhero Blue Devil.

According to the article, the role of Blue Devil will be recurring and is described as "Stuntman turned movie star, Daniel Cassidy became semi-famous after playing the demonic Blue Devil.  But now, eight years later, Cassidy finds himself living out his days in frustration, pining for his former fame while on a collision course with destiny."

In addition, DC Comics released the following movie poster for The Adventures of Blue Devil, which features Cassidy as Blue Devil along with his Blue Devil comic book series supporting characters Sharon Scott and Wayne Tarrant.  Tarrant appears as the supervillain Bolt in the poster, possibly hinting at the character's appearance on Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing follows Abby Arcane (Crystal Reed) as she investigates what seems to be a deadly swamp-born virus in a small town in Louisiana but soon discovers that the swamp holds mystical and terrifying secrets.  When unexplainable and chilling horrors emerge from the murky marsh, no one is safe.

Ziering, 54, is best known as Steve Sanders on the TV series Beverly Hills, 90210 and as Fin Shepard in Syfy's Sharknado series of TV movies.  In addition, Ziering has voiced the role of Harry Osborn in 2003's Spider-Man: The New Animated Series and Mason Forrest in the animated series Batman Beyond.  His films include Endless Love, Savate, No Way Back and Domino, and he's appeared in episodes of The Muppets, Defiance, CSI: NY, Biker Mice from Mars, Son of the Beach, JAG, Godzilla: The Series, Parker Lewis Can't Lose, Married...with Children, and Melrose Place.

Created in 1984 by Dan Mishkin and Gary Cohn, Blue Devil first appeared in The Fury of Firestorm #24 as Daniel Cassidy, a special effects wizard and stuntman hired to create and play the title character in the movie Blue Devil. Cassidy created a full-body costume with a hidden powered exoskeleton and built-in special-effects devices.  When two of his co-stars accidentally freed a demon named Nebiros, Cassidy used his costume to drive the demon back, but not before being blasted with mystical energy.  After the fight, Cassidy found that the blast had permanently grafted the Blue Devil costume to his body.

Cassidy quickly found himself embroiled in repeated adventures and conflicts with supervillains, as his newfound status turned him into a "weirdness magnet".  After failing to find a way to remove his costume, Cassidy started to enjoy his new lifestyle, and became more and more comfortable as a superhero, even accepting a place in the Justice League of America.  He gained a sidekick when Eddie Bloomberg, his former gofer and devoted fan, designed a suit similar to his own and became the teen superhero Kid Devil.  Eventually, Cassidy moved into "The House of Weirdness" with Cain the Caretaker as his superintendent.

Blue Devil was later employed as a bouncer at the Oblivion Bar, an interdimensional place for magical beings, and there he was recruited by Ragman, Enchantress, and Detective Chimp to fight against The Spectre in the event series Day of Vengeance.  With his enhanced demonic strength, he was the heavy hitter of the Shadowpact, a team of magical heroes devoted to fight for every "lost cause".  Feeling necessary for the first time in a long time, he devoted himself to the team.  One of their goals is to help look over the wild magic of the "Tenth Age", a direct result of the events of Day of Vengeance.

In 2011, DC Comics rebooted its continuity with a new timeline known as The New 52.  In this new timeline, Blue Devil was reintroduced busting up a drug deal and running into Black Lightning, who was also there for the same reason.  The two heroes both revealed they were trying to take down crime lord Tobias Whale, but Black Lightning didn't believe Blue Devil.  A fight ensued, with Blue Devil quickly getting the better of Black Lightning.  He attempted to make him listen, but was interrupted by the Los Angeles police, who were ready to open fire.  Black Lightning took the opportunity to run off and Blue Devil managed to escape as well.  During the Forever Evil storyline, Blue Devil was among the magic users that were captured by Felix Faust and Nick Necro in order to use them as part of a weapon that would defeat the creature that destroyed the Crime Syndicate's Earth.

This will be the first time the character will appear in live-action, although Blue Devil has appeared in the animated series Justice League Unlimited (voiced by Lex Lang), Young Justice and Justice League Action.

Swamp Thing is currently expected to debut on DC Universe sometime in May 2019.

SWAMP THING Reportedly Casts Derek Mears as...Swamp Thing

Do not bring your evil here.

Splash Report has revealed that the upcoming DC Universe series Swamp Thing, based on the DC Comics elemental creature, is considering Derek Mears for the title role.  It remains unclear, however, who will be playing Dr. Alec Holland, the scientist whose consciousness and memories form the basis for Swamp Thing.

The live-action DC Universe adaptation will be executive produced by Len Wiseman (Sleepy Hollow) who will also direct the pilot. Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Netflix’s Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It) are attached to co-write the series and act as showrunners, with James Wan (Aquaman) set to executive produce the series alongside Verheiden, Dauberman, and Michael Clear.  The series is set to start filming this fall in Wilmington, North Carolina.

Mears, 46, is best known as Jason Vorhees in the 2009 reboot of Friday the 13th, the supervillain Dwarfstar on The CW's The Flash, and as Renzo in the 2017 revival of Twin Peaks.  He's also appeared in the movies Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and Predators.  His other television appearances include episodes of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Comedy Bang! Bang!, Community, E.R., and The Shield.

Created in 1971 by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets #92 as Alex Olsen, a talented young scientist in early 1900's Louisiana, who was married to a woman named Linda.  Alex's assistant, Damian Ridge, was secretly in love with Linda and plotted the death of his friend.  He tampered with Olsen's chemicals, killing him in the explosion and dumped his body in the nearby swamp. Ridge used Linda's grief to convince her to marry him, only to one day become confronted with Alex Olsen again, now a risen humanoid pile of vegetable matter.  Olsen killed Ridge, but Linda did not recognize him and ran away leaving Olsen to wander the swamps alone as a monster.

The character was reinvented by Wein and Wrightson a year in Swamp Thing (vol.1) #1 as Dr. Alec Holland, a scientist who worked in a secret facility located in the Louisiana swamplands with his wife, Linda.  Together, they invented a bio-restorative formula that could solve any nations' food shortage problems.  Two thugs working for Nathan Ellery, head of the criminal organization The Conclave, barged into Alec's lab, knocked him out, and planted a bomb in the facility.  Alec woke up as the bomb exploded, and in flames, he ran into the swamp.  His body was drenched in the bio-restorative formula, and this affected the plant life of the swamp, imbuing it with Alec's consciousness and memories.  The newly conscious plant life formed a semblance of a human and rose up from the bog as the Swamp Thing, the latest in a long line of Earth elementals created when The Green is in need of protection.

The Swamp Thing originally thought that he was Alec Holland, transformed by the freak accident into a monster.  He sought to regain his human body, but often met opposition in the form of Anton Arcane and his ever-growing legion of "Un-Men".  After finally defeating Arcane, Swamp Thing was set upon by General Sunderland's men in a covert military operation.  The resulting attack blastws a hole in Swamp Thing's head and destroyed the lives of many of his friends.  Sunderland brought the Swamp Thing's body back to Sunderland Corporation to study and unlock the secret of the Bio-Restorative Formula.

Sunderland hired Jason Woodrue, the Floronic Man, to study Swamp Thing's body, which he stored in a cryochest.  Over the course of his research, Floronic Man deduced that Swamp Thing is a plant that thinks it's Alec Holland, while the real Alec Holland died in the explosion.  Sunderland and Floronic Man parted on bad terms, so the scientist used Sunderland's automated computer systems to raise the thermostat in Swamp Thing's cryochest.  This allowed Swamp Thing's body to regenerate, and in his search for Sunderland, he stumbled across the Floronic Man's report, which sent him into a mindless rage.  He killed Sunderland and set off for the swamps.

Later on, Swamp Thing formed a close friendship with Anton Arcane's niece, Abby Cable. Her husband Matthew grew resentful of her disinterest in sex and turned to alcohol, further pushing her toward the Swamp Thing.  She asks for his help when her autistic students at Elysium Lawns are tormented by Kamara, the Monkey-King, and on the same night the demon attacked, Matthew left to help Abby.  However, his alcoholism caused him to crash his car, mortally wounding him.  To stay alive, he made a pact with the spirit of Anton Arcane, who possessed his body.  After weeks, Abby realized that the man she thought was her husband was actually her uncle Anton.  Her feeling of disgust sent her into a horrible shock.  Swamp Thing confronted the possessed Matthew, and with the guidance of the monster, discovered Abby's body.

Enraged that Arcane sent the "soul" of his niece to Hell, Swamp Thing beat Arcane to a pulp, allowing Matthew's trapped spirit to cast the soul of the sorcerer out of his body and back to the netherworld.  This returned Matthew's control of his body, but left him comatose.  To set things right, Swamp Thing traveled into The Green, the Spirit World, and Hell, all to reclaim Abby's soul.  He was forced to fight off a legion of the damned, including Anton Arcane, but he prevailed again with the help of Etrigan the Demon.  After Abby returned to life, Swamp Thing and Abby confessed their love for each other.  To celebrate the beginning of their relationship, Swamp Thing grew hallucinogenic tubers for Abby to eat, enabling her to see the world as he does.

Mears will be the second actor to portray Swamp Thing in live action, after Dick Durock in the films Swamp Thing and The Return of Swamp Thing, and the 1990 Swamp Thing TV series.  The character has also appeared in various animated projects, including the Swamp Thing animated series (voiced by Len Carlson), Justice League Dark (voiced by Roger R. Cross), Batman and Harley Quinn (voiced by John DiMaggio), and Justice League Action (voiced by Mark Hamill).

Swamp Thing is expected to debut on DC Universe sometime in 2019.

DC Universe Service Developing SWAMP THING Drama Series

Do not bring your evil here, I warn you.  Beware the wrath of...Swamp Thing!

Deadline has word that the upcoming DC Universe digital service has given a script-to-series order for the drama series Swamp Thing, based on the DC Comics swamp monster and plant elemental.

The series is the fifth DC Comics adaptation in development for DC Universe, after the animated series Harley Quinn and Young Justice: Outsiders, and the live-action series Titans and Metropolis

According to the article, Swamp Thing "centers on CDC researcher Abby Arcane.  When she returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her.  But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all."

Swamp Thing will be written by Mark Verheiden (Ash vs. Evil Dead) and It co-writer Gary Dauberman.  They will serve as executive producers with Atomic Monster’s James Wan and Michael Clear, while Rob Hackett serves as co-producer.

Created in 1971 by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson, Swamp Thing first appeared in House of Secrets #92 as Alex Olsen, a scientist in the early 20th century who was caught in a lab explosion caused by his co-worker, Damian Ridge, who intended to kill him to gain the hand of Olsen's wife, Linda.  Olsen was physically altered by chemicals and the forces within the swamp.  He was transformed into a monstrous creature who killed Ridge before he could murder Linda, who started to suspect Ridge of murdering Alex.  Unable to speak and with his monstrous appearance, he was unable to make Linda realize his true identity, and he returned to the swamp.

In 1972's Swamp Thing (vol.1) #1, Wein and Wrightson updated the time frame to the 1970s and featured a new version of the character -- Alec Holland, a scientist working in the Louisiana swamps on a secret bio-restorative formula "that can make forests out of deserts."  Holland was killed by a bomb planted by agents of the mysterious Mr. E (Nathan Ellery), who wanted the formula.  Splashed with burning chemicals in the massive fire, Holland ran from the lab and fell into the muck-filled swamp, after which a creature resembling a humanoid plant appeared.

In 1984, writer Alan Moore reworked Swamp Thing's origin to make him a true monster as opposed to a human transformed into a monster.  The Sunderland Corporation hunted Swamp Thing and "killed" him in a hail of bullets.  The subsequent investigation revealed that Swamp Thing was not Alec Holland transformed into a plant, but actually a form of plant life that had absorbed Holland's body and created a "copy" of his form and consciousness after exposure to his serum, with Swamp Thing's appearance being the plants' attempt to duplicate Holland's human form.  This resulted in Swamp Thing suffering a temporary mental breakdown and identity crisis, but he eventually reasserted himself in time to stop the latest scheme of the Floronic Man.  Later, Moore revealed that there had been dozens, perhaps hundreds, of Swamp Things since the dawn of humanity, and that all versions of the creature were designated defenders of the Parliament of Trees, an elemental community also known as "the Green" that connects all plant life on Earth.

This will be the second live-action Swamp Thing television series, after the first series that aired from 1990 to 1993 on USA Network starring Dick Durock as Swamp Thing.

Swamp Thing is expected to debut on DC Universe sometime in 2019.
