SUPERMAN Reboot Film in Development with Ta-Nehisi Coates Writing, J.J. Abrams Producing

2021 is becoming quite the super year for the Man of Steel.

Less than a week after the well-received premiere of The CW series Superman & Lois, Deadline has confirmed reports that a new Superman film reboot is in the works with comics writer, journalist and author Ta-Nehisi Coates writing and J.J. Abrams producing under his Bad Robot production company.

According to the article, Hannah Minghella will serve as producer and there are details yet regarding the plot or casting despite reports of Man of Steel and Justice League actor Henry Cavill wanting to reprise his role as Superman/Clark Kent.

Back in November 2019, Variety reported that there had been discussions with Abrams, whose company Bad Robot signed a massive first-look deal with Warner Bros., and there was a meeting with Black Panther actor Michael B. Jordan earlier in the year with Jordan pitching his vision for Superman.

Coates, 45, is the current writer of Black Panther and Captain America for Marvel Comics and is the author of the non-fiction books The Beautiful Struggle, Between the World and Me, and We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy.  His first fiction novel, The Water Dancer, was published in 2019.

Abrams, 54, previously directed the films Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, Mission: Impossible III, and Super 8.  In addition, he created the ABC series Alias, and co-created the television series Felicity, Lost, and Fringe.  Currently, Abrams is working on a TV series based on DC Comics' Justice League Dark for HBO Max.

In 2004, Abrams wrote the screenplay for Superman: Flyby, a Superman origin story that included Krypton besieged by a civil war between Jor-El and his corrupt brother, Kata-Zor (not Zor-El). Before Kata-Zor sentences Jor-El to prison, Kal-El is launched to Earth to fulfill a prophecy. Adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, he forms a romance with Lois Lane in the Daily Planet.  However, Lois is more concerned with exposing Lex Luthor, written as a government agent obsessed with UFO phenomena.  Clark reveals himself to the world as Superman, bringing Kata-Zor’s son, Ty-Zor, and three other Kryptonians to Earth.  Superman is defeated and killed, and visits Jor-El (who committed suicide on Krypton while in prison) in Kryptonian heaven.  Resurrected, he returns to Earth and defeats the four Kryptonians, while the script ends with Superman off to Krypton, leaving a cliffhanger for a sequel.

SUPERMAN & LOIS Teaser Trailer Introduces the Kent Family

Superman is about to return, just when we need him the most.

The CW has released the first teaser trailer for Superman & Lois, the upcoming DC Comics Arrowverse series starring Tyler Hoechlin as Superman/Clark Kent and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane.

The 50-second teaser "Family Crest" features voiceover narration by Hoechlin as Superman, accompanied by fleeting images of the two lead characters and their sons, Jonathan Kent and Jordan Kent, played respectively by Jordan Elsass and Alexander Garfin.

"We all begin as one version of ourselves," remarks Superman in the voiceover, "but as we grow, life changes us.  Every moment shaping our character, shifting our priorities, stretching every fiber of our being, until we think we've lost ourselves in the stress of it all."

Superman flashes his traditional red heat vision, a distinct change from the bluish-white heat vision he previously displayed on Supergirl.  "But that's not true," he continues, "because under the torn fibers, is a stronger person, forged like steel, with the courage to fight for those we love.  And what we thought was lost can be found...in family."

If you'd like to check out the teaser for Superman & Lois, you can view it below thanks to the official The CW Network account on YouTube...

SUPERMAN & LOIS Casts Dylan Walsh as General Sam Lane

Lois Lane just found her father.

Deadline has word that the upcoming CW Arrowverse series Superman & Lois, based on the DC Comics characters, has cast Dylan Walsh in the role of General Sam Lane, father of Elizabeth Tulloch's character, Lois Lane, and her sister Lucy.

According to the article, Sam Lane is described as "a no-nonsense Army general who’s determined to keep America, and the world, safe from all threats – from this world or beyond. Lane’s a workaholic who demands nothing but excellence from all those in his life."

Walsh, 56, is probably best known as Dr. Sean McNamara on the FX series Nip/Tuck, and has appeared the films Secretariat and The Lake House, and in episodes of Blue Bloods, Whiskey Cavalier, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Longmire, NCIS: New Orleans, Castle, Revenge, Unforgettable, and The Twilight Zone (2002).

Created in 1959 by Robert Bernstein and Kurt Schaffenberger, Sam Lane first appeared in Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #13 as a horse farmer in the town of Pittsdale, but was later reimagined in 1987's Adventures of Superman #424 as a hard and outspoken US Army General who often causes problems for Superman and his daughter Lois. Lane had wanted his eldest child to be a boy, so had treated Lois as a surrogate son, when he was present at all.

When Lex Luthor became President of the United States, he made Lane Secretary of Defense.  This inevitably led to Lois, as an investigative journalist trying to prove Luthor was crooked, opposing her father, especially during the buildup to the Imperiex War.  During the War, General Lane was apparently killed by an Imperiex probe, when he detonated the nuclear engine of his tank to crack the shell of the probe and give Black Lightning the chance to get through its armor.

Believing that their father was dead, Lois and Lucy grieved for him.  Lucy decided to try and honor her father's memory and give him the soldier he was denied by joining the U.S. Army. Lucy was wounded during the Amazons' attack on Washington D.C., but was rescued and brought to a secret facility.  General Sam Lane finally revealed himself alive and in charge of a covert operation called Project 7734.  Lucy was given a mystically-powered costume and identity of Superwoman to infiltrate Kandor to gather intelligence on the Kryptonians of New Krypton, whom the U.S. government believed to be a risk for Earth's security.

Under Lane's orders, the disgraced Luthor transformed the Earth's sun from yellow to red to rob the Kryptonians of their powers, until this countermeasure was neutralized and the sun reverted back to yellow.  At the same time, Jimmy Olsen and his associates transmitted all of General Lane's activities to news sites all over the World Wide Web.  When confronted by an angered Supergirl and his daughter Lois, Sam Lane commited suicide rather than be made accountable to an international court.

In the current DC Comics continuity known as DC Rebirth, Sam Lane is alive once again and seen as the official U.S. military representative whenever a nationwide crisis arises.

Walsh will be the sixth actor to portray Sam Lane in live action, after Kirk Alyn in the 1978 film Superman, Denis Arndt and Harve Presnell on the ABC series Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Michael Ironside on the CW series Smallville, and Glenn Morshower on the CBS/CW series Supergirl.  The character has also appeared in various animated projects, including Superman: The Animated Series (voiced by Dean Jones), All-Star Superman (voiced by Steven Blum), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (voiced by Danny Huston), and Justice League: Throne of Atlantis (voiced by Jay K. Johnson).

Superman & Lois is currently expected to premiere on The CW sometime in Fall 2020.

SUPERMAN & LOIS Gets Series Order from The CW

The Man of Steel and The World's Greatest Reporter are back on TV!

Deadline is reporting that The CW has given a straight-to-series order for Superman & Lois, an upcoming DC Comics Arrowverse drama starring Tyler Hoechlin as Superman/Clark Kent and Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane.  The series is expected to begin airing sometime during the 2020-21 TV season.

The series was first announced in the works back in October, with the pickup given in lieu of a pilot order, after the pilot script had been receiving strong early buzz.

It remains unclear how this pickup will affect Green Arrow and the Canaries, the proposed Arrow spinoff series starring Katherine McNamara, Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy reprising their roles.  According to the article, The CW may go with one new DC series for next year but a final decision will be made after the network executives review all their pilots.

Here's the official description for the new series:

SUPERMAN & LOIS stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the world’s most famous Super Hero and comic books’ most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today’s society. Both Hoechlin and Tulloch have already appeared as these iconic characters in multiple episodes of The CW’s DC Super Hero series, including this season’s Crisis on Infinite Earths Crossover event, which concludes tonight. Based on the characters from DC created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, “SUPERMAN & LOIS” is written and executive produced by Todd Helbing (“The Flash”) and executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Geoff Johns. The series is from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Hoechlin, 32, made his Arrowverse debut as Superman in the 2016 Supergirl episode "The Adventures of Supergirl".  He's also known as Derek Hale on the MTV series Teen Wolf and also appeared in the films Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed, Everybody Wants Some!!, Solstice, and Road to Perdition.  In addition, he's appeared on episodes of the TV series Castle, Lincoln Heights, CSI: Miami, and 7th Heaven.

Tulloch, 38, made her Arrowverse debut as Lois Lane in the 2018 The Flash episode "Elseworlds, Part 1".  She's also known as Juliette Silverton/Eve on the NBC series Grimm, has appeared in the films Concussion and The Artist, and on episodes of Portlandia, Tyranny, Outlaw, Moonlight, House, Cold Case, and The West Wing.

Hoechlin's Superman and Tulloch's Lois Lane are currently appearing in the CW Arrowverse crossover event, "Crisis on Infinite Earths", which concludes tonight with Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow.

CW Developing SUPERGIRL Spinoff SUPERMAN & LOIS

Looks like Henry Cavill won't be suiting up again as Superman anytime soon.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that The CW is developing Superman & Lois, a new Arrowverse series starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as their respective Supergirl characters Superman/Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

According to the article, Superman & Lois will focus on "the world's most famous superhero and comics' most famous journalist as they deal with all the stress, pressures and complexities that come with being working parents in today's society."  This description hints that their son in the comics, Jon Kent, may be featured as well.

Former The Flash showrunner Todd Helbing will write the script and serve as executive producer for the potential series.  In March, Helbing stepped down as showrunner on The Flash to focus on developing Superman & Lois.

This is the second Arrowverse spinoff in development at The CW for the 2020-21 TV season, after the proposed Arrow spinoff Green Arrow and the Canaries starring Katherine McNamara as Mia Smoak/Green Arrow, Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance/Black Canary and Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake/Black Canary.

Hoechlin's Superman and Tulloch's Lois Lane will next appear in the upcoming CW crossover event, "Crisis on Infinite Earths", which begins with Supergirl on December 8, 2019.

KRYPTON Season 2 Trailer Teases General Zod's Rise to Power & Lobo

The Main Man is almost here.

Syfy has dropped the first full trailer for the second season of Krypton, based on the lore of DC Comics' Superman.  The one-minute, 35-second trailer features the rise of General Dru-Zod (Colin Salmon), the return of Brainiac (Blake Ritson), Doomsday, and the introduction of the intergalactic bounty hunter known as Lobo (Emmett J. Scanlan).

The trailer opens with an address from General Zod, who remarks, "My fellow Kryptonians.  Six months ago, we came together to face the dawn of a new era, to rebuild a Krypton, unrecognizable in its perfection."

We see fleeting glimpses of the Superman cape's House of El crest being replaced by the House of Zod's and Nyssa-Vex (Wallis Day) looking out of a spaceship window in orbit.

"Whatever game you're playing," says a bearded Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe), "you will lose."

"Zod's taken control of the planet," remarks Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) as we see Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell) apparently working with her adult son and walking away as a Rankless woman is tortured, "he's trying to conquer the galaxy, Val's leading a rebellion..."

Val-El (Ian McElhinney), Seg's grandfather, tells the one-eyed Jax-Ur (Hannah Waddingham) and the Black Zero resistance group, "That bastard has stolen our better tomorrow.  We're stealing it back!"

"...and I believe that you're the only one who can make that right," continues Adam as we see Seg-El using some sort of energy knife and cutting into the Phantom Zone where's been trapped since the end of Season One.

"You didn't really think it would be that easy, did you?" Brainiac asks Seg in a forest somewhere.

Lyta tells someone, presumably Val-El, "If we have to, we will finish your rebellion with force."

We see Seg calling out to General Zod from the Phantom Zone, saying, "It's time for this madness to end!"  This is followed by a glimpse of Doomsday and someone trying to shoot Adam Strange, only for him to disappear.

"You think you are the Man of Steel," replies General Zod.  Next, we see Nyssa leading a charge of Black Zero fighters against Zod's soldiers.

We go back to the forest, where Seg watches helplessly as Adam is blasted back by a large gun belonging to Lobo.  "Name's Lobo!" he introduces himself.

We glimpse Seg facing a charging Doomsday, then see him leaping and attacking Brainiac.

Lastly, after his introduction, Lobo makes the sound of a cheering crowd, then says in false modesty, "Please, stop, you're makin' me blush."

If you'd like to check out the new Season 2 trailer, you can view it below thanks to the official Syfy account on YouTube...

TITANS Casts Joshua Orpin as Superboy/Conner Kent

Begun this clone's war has.

Deadline is reporting that the DC Universe series Titans has cast Joshua Orpin as Conner Kent, better known to DC Comics fans as Kon-El, a.k.a. Superboy!  The character was previously teased in a post-credits scene at the end of the Titans Season 1 finale, "Dick Grayson", and factors heavily into the show's upcoming second season.

According to the article, Superboy is described as "Superboy, a.k.a. Conner Kent, is the angsty teenager of steel searching for purpose and the truth about his past.  While looking for answers, he crashes into the world of the Titans where he finds an unlikely home and surrogate family as well as revelations that carry more complications than he ever bargained for."

Orpin, 24, is a 6'1" Australian actor who will be seen in the upcoming Foxtel drama series Upright and his most recent appearance was in The Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories for the Seven Network in Australia.  In addition, he was in the film The Neon Spectrum.

Created in 1993 by Karl Kesel and Tom Grummett, the Conner Kent Superboy first appeared in The Adventures of Superman #500.  After the death of Superman at the hands of the supervillain Doomsday, Project Cadmus Executive Director Paul Westfield wanted to create a clone replacement of Superman that would follow the agendas of Project Cadmus as well as his own personal agenda.  After failed attempts to acquire Superman's DNA (which included an attempt to steal his corpse), Westfield decided to genetically alter a human clone to look like Superman and made the clone to be the closest human equivalent to a Kryptonian as they could based on their research.  During their research when they had Superman's body, Westfield's scientists discovered a bio-electric aura surrounding Superman's body that provided some of Superman's powers such as invulnerability, flight through a form of self-telekinesis, protection from getting dirty and protection from skin-tight clothing to be damaged. The aura was translated into a telekinetic field for a human that would give the clone the ability to simulate Superman's powers such as flight, invulnerability, and strength. This was later known as "tactile telekinesis" by the scientists.

After twelve failed attempts, the clone known as Experiment 13 was grown from a single cell to a teenage boy in less than a week and was a complete success.  The clone was given implanted memories and underwent an artificial maturation process intended to match the age of the original Superman.  This clone was released from his cloning tube too early, however, and emerged as a teenager.  While at first calling himself "Superman", he would later be known as Superboy.

A defining moment in Superboy's life came following Superman's resurrection, when he asked Superboy to come with him to the Fortress of Solitude.  After explaining how he considered Superboy part of his family, Superman offered him the Kryptonian name Kon-El.  Superboy tearfully accepted, overjoyed with the simple joy of having a real name, and would eventually accept the everyday name "Conner."  After Cadmus was shut down, Superboy had no job and no place to stay.  He relocated to Metropolis, becoming the "super" at a tenement building called Calvin Gardens.  Eventually Superman invites him to stay with his parents in Smallville, which he gladly accepted and did for quite some time.  Superboy soon became a founding member of Young Justice, a group of teenage heroes who intended to be the next Justice League one day.

Later basing himself in Smallville with a new civilian identity as Clark Kent's cousin "Conner Kent", Superboy was asked by Superman to accept Cyborg's invitation to join a new incarnation of the Teen Titans with his former Young Justice teammates Robin, Impulse, and Wonder Girl.  Other members of the team were Teen Titans veterans Cyborg, Starfire, and Beast Boy.  After the new team gathered at Titans Tower in San Francisco Bay, it was revealed via an email sent to Robin that Superboy's human DNA was not from Paul Westfield, but from Superman's arch-enemy, Lex Luthor.

Orpin will be the second actor to portray the Conner Kent Superboy in live-action, after Lucas Grabeel in the CW series Smallville.  The character has also appeared in various animated projects, including Young Justice (voiced by Nolan North), Teen Titans Go!, The Death of Superman, and the Reign of the Supermen TV movie (voiced by Cameron Monaghan).

Titans is expected to return to DC Universe for Season 2 sometime in Fall 2019.

The CW Arrowverse Casts Elizabeth Tulloch as Lois Lane

Hi, Lois Lane.  Welcome to the planet.

Deadline has word that The CW Arrowverse has cast Elizabeth "Bitsie" Tulloch as legendary DC Comics character Lois Lane.  The character will make her debut as part of the annual DC Arrowverse crossover involving CW shows The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl.

It's not known how many episodes Tulloch will appear as Lois, but Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will be featured in all three episodes.

In an earlier statement from August, Supergirl executive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner said, "We couldn't be more excited to introduce Lois Lane to the Arrowverse.  This dogged, determined and brave reporter will make for a strong partner to Superman and amazing addition to our universe of DC characters."

Tulloch, 38, is probably best known as Juliette Silverton/Eve on the NBC series Grimm.  She has appeared in the films Concussion and The Artist, and on episodes of Portlandia, Tyranny, Outlaw, Moonlight, House, Cold Case, and The West Wing.

Created in 1938 by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Lois Lane first appeared in Action Comics (vol.1) #1 as an aggressive, career-minded reporter for the Daily Star (the newspaper's name was changed to the Daily Planet in Action Comics (vol.1) #23 in 1940).  After Clark Kent joined the paper and Superman debuted around the same time, Lois found herself attracted to Superman but displeased with her new journalistic competition in the form of Kent.  Starting early as the 1940s, Lois began to suspect that Clark Kent was Superman, and started to make various attempts at uncovering his secret identity, all of which backfired because of Superman's efforts.

In 1986, after DC Comics rebooted its entire continuity following the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, writer/artist John Byrne revamped Lois in the miniseries The Man of Steel (vol.1) as a former Army brat and tough-as-nails reporter who rarely needed rescuing.  She was depicted as strong, opinionated, yet sensitive.  Another major change made was that Lois did not fall in love with just Superman, although she was attracted to him.  Lois initially resented the rookie Clark Kent getting the story on Superman as his first piece when she had spent ages trying to get an interview.  Following Clark's brief rampage under the influence of the Eradicator, Lois was hesitant to forgive Clark for "selling out" to Collin Thornton and running Newstime Magazine, but forgave him in a span of mere minutes when he returned to "grovel for his job back".  Clark elected to repay Lois by finally letting go of his self-imposed inhibitions and passionately kissed her. The two became a couple, and eventually, Lois accepted a proposal of marriage.

Before they were able to be married, however, Superman died in Lois' arms after a battle royal with the monster Doomsday.  After a period of time, Superman returned to life, and both he and Lois resumed their relationship.  Upon discovering Clark still had her wedding ring within a handkerchief, Lois warmly broke down, teasing Clark and finally agreeing to become his wife.  In 1996, Lois and Clark were finally married in the comic book Superman: The Wedding Album.

In 2011, DC once again rebooted its entire continuity with The New 52, but just four years later, the pre-Flashpoint Lois and Clark returned in the miniseries Convergence, with had them dealing with the impending birth of their child, as Superman is called to protect the city.  Their son, Jonathan Samuel Kent, was born shortly after and eventually began to develop superpowers of his own as he grew older and learned the truth about his parents' true origins.

Tulloch will be the eighth actress to portray Lois Lane in live action, after Noel Neill in the movie serials Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs. Superman, and Adventures of Superman TV series; Phyllis Coates in the movie Superman and the Mole Men and Adventures of Superman; Margot Kidder in the four Superman films starring Christopher Reeve; Teri Hatcher in the TV series Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman; Erica Durance in the TV series Smallville; Kate Bosworth in the film Superman Returns; and Amy Adams in the movies Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.

The three-night Arrowverse crossover event begins with The Flash on December 9th, followed by Arrow on December 10th, and ending with Supergirl on December 11th.
