Bryan Fuller Describes HANNIBAL's Version of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS

It's enough to make you want to have some NBC programming execs with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

With the third and apparently final season of the NBC series Hannibal having concluded, CraveOnline spoke with showrunner Bryan Fuller in a Q&A interview about how the show would've handled the Thomas Harris novel The Silence of the Lambs if they had the rights to adapt it.

In the interview, Fuller reveals his dream casting for the book's Buffalo Bill, how Anna Chlumsky's Miriam Lass might factor in, and how to make his version of Clarice Starling different from Jodie Foster's take.  Here's the rundown...

CraveOnline: One of the things a lot of the fans wanted to see in Hannibal was The Silence of the Lambs. Obviously it never panned out in time. Do you still have any hope that you can adapt it someday, down the road, or will your plans lead you elsewhere?

Bryan Fuller: I absolutely do hope and would love to tell Silence of the Lambs with this cast. I love that novel and I think there’s fantastic ways to reimagine it for thirty years later, and… yes. Period. [Laughs.]

Crave: How would that have worked? You introduced Miriam Lass [in Season One]. Would you have brought her back in or would there just be a new character, a lot like Miriam Lass, named “Clarice Starling?”

Fuller: I adore Anna Chlumsky, and we talked about where Miriam Lass is now and what she would be doing, so yes, Miriam Lass would be - depending on Anna’s availability - as big a part as Anna’s availability would allow in a Silence of the Lambs arc.

Crave: But she would be separate from Clarice Starling?

Fuller: Yes.

Crave: I imagine, since you adapted Red Dragon by tweaking it and shifting certain plot points around, you would have to do the same with The Silence of the Lambs. What are your initial thoughts on how The Silence of the Lambs would work in a serialized format, since everyone knows the story already?

Fuller: I am imagining a parallel structure of Hannibal in the institution, with a severely scarred Chilton, now having returned to his post, and juxtaposing that, back in the heyday of Hannibal as a psychiatrist, perhaps even earlier than we met him the first time, when he had Benjamin Raspail as a patient, and weave that story in and around the modern day Silence of the Lambs tale as we know it.

Crave: We saw a dark version of Barney [Lecter’s guard] in Season Two. Would there be other plans for Barney’s character?

Fuller: If we got Silence of the Lambs we would be hitting Barney, we would be hitting Benjamin Raspail, we would be hitting Buffalo Bill… there would be the same kind of voracious need to fan fictionalize all of those characters [laughs] and reimagine certain specific scenarios that caused them to cross paths, or uncross paths as their stories were unfolding.

Crave: What about Ardelia Mapp [Clarice Starling’s roommate]? Would she have a role as well?

Fuller: Major. Major.

Crave: You’ve made excellent casting decisions so far… what would you have looked for in a Buffalo Bill?

Fuller: I would love to cast Lee Pace as Buffalo Bill. His first, most notable, award-winning career move was playing a transgendered person [in 2003’s A Soldier’s Girl], and I think it would be fascinating to return him to that side of his acting skill.

Crave: You’ve worked with him before [in Pushing Daisies]. Had Lee Pace ever come close to being in Hannibal before, in another capacity, or would you have reserved that role for him?

Fuller: Many, many, many times. Every season. We constantly asked Lee but he was always so busy, because he was making Guardians of the Galaxy and Halt and Catch Fire and the Hobbit films. So his dance card was full but we kept on asking. We had talked about him playing Francis Dolarhyde, and it was something that we were sort of hanging in the balance, to see if Halt and Catch Fire would have another season. So he wasn’t available. But I think it worked out amazingly well for us. [Laughs.]

Crave: What about Clarice? Do you have any dream casting for Clarice Starling in your version of The Silence of the Lambs?

Fuller: Well, there’s a couple of ways to go. There’s the Ellen Page way, which I think would be fantastic and more kind of in line with the Clarice that we all know. But I know I would also like to explore who Clarice would be from a different racial background. There’s something about being poor and white in the South but there’s something else about being poor and black in the South, and I think it could be the necessary gateway into the character, to make Clarice as much our own signature character as we tried to make Will Graham.

Crave: In The Silence of the Lambs and throughout the other books, Hannibal’s interest in Clarice becomes romantic. You’ve already done that with Will Graham in the show. Would Will be in that season or would Hannibal be moving on to a new romantic conquest?

Fuller: Well, I think that all depends on how Season 4 would have ended. [Laughs.]

HANNIBAL Cancelled by NBC, Producer Exploring Options

First Constantine and now Hannibal.  NBC, you're officially dead to us.

TVLine reported yesterday that NBC series has cancelled their critically acclaimed series Hannibal and that the show's current third season will be its last.

"NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared," said showrunner Bryan Fuller in a statement, "and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers.  [NBC president] Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure."

Added Fuller, "Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again.  And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC."

The decision was probably an easy one for NBC, after the June 11th episode earned a series-low 1.7 million viewers and a 0.5 in the demo.

NBC issued their own statement, remarking, "We have been tremendously proud of Hannibal over its three seasons.  Bryan and his team of writers and producers, as well as our incredible actors, have brought a visual palette of storytelling that has been second to none in all of television — broadcast or cable.  We thank Gaumont and everyone involved in the show for their tireless efforts that have made Hannibal an incredible experience for audiences around the world."

So, Fannibals...What now?

According to DeadlineHannibal executive producer Martha De Laurentiis said that "we are exploring options with other potential partners" and invited viewers to "join us in sending a message to other potential partners."

The article also mentions that there's significant interest in Hannibal from other outlets, suggesting that the one that would make most sense is Amazon, which already has exclusive rights to the existing three seasons of the show as part of a four-year, five-show deal with NBCUniversal.  The deal is in the middle of its term, which would complicate potential negotiations with Amazon competitors like Netflix.

The remaining ten episodes of Hannibal will air on NBC Thursday nights at 10 p.m. EST, ending sometime in August.

HANNIBAL Season 3 Trailer is Served

The third course is being prepared.

After months of anticipation, the first trailer for the third season of NBC's Hannibal has finally debuted.  The stellar television series based on the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris hasn't been a huge ratings hit for NBC, but is one of the few network shows with broad critical acclaim and did well enough to earn another season of thirteen episodes.

When last we left the series, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) confronted Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) and was severely wounded following a brutal pantry fight.  Dr. Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) was pushed out of a window by Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl), leaving her seriously injured.  Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) found Abigail, only to end up stabbed by Hannibal with a linoleum knife before Lecter sliced Abigail's throat.  Leaving everyone bleeding out, Hannibal was last seen boarding a plane to France with Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson).

The new two-minute trailer opens with Will waking up in a hospital bed as he speaks in an ominous voiceover, saying "Our minds can concoct all sorts of scenarios when we don't want to believe something.  We construct fairy tales...and we accept them."

We get our first look at Tao Okamato as Chiyoh, the ward of Lady Murasaki from Harris' novel Hannibal Rising.  "Hannibal took someone from you," Chiyoh says to Will.  "Are you here to take someone from him?"  Will then asks Chiyoh if she knows where Hannibal is.

Next, we see Hannibal about to speak to an audience of art patrons before a projected image of the William Blake painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed in Sun, followed by fleeting images of Bedelia anxiously descending a staircase, Will in a graveyard, Hannibal shaking hands with the art patrons, Will being escorted down a set of steps by a rifle-wielding Chiyoh, Hannibal creepily touching Bedelia's shoulder, and Hannibal doing research from a series of ancient medical books.

Lastly, we see Will confront Hannibal in a set of darkened catacombs.  "Hannibal," says Will, "I forgive you."  Hannibal pauses for a moment before turning to leave.

If you'd like to see the trailer, you can check it out below thanks to the official Hannibal YouTube account.  Please note, however, that the audio only plays in the right audio channel.

Hannibal is expected to return for Season 3 on NBC sometime this summer.

HANNIBAL's Bryan Fuller Wants David Tennant to Guest Star

The Doctor meeting Dr. Lecter...How charming.

The Metro has revealed that Bryan Fuller, the creator and showrunner of the NBC series Hannibal, wants former Doctor Who star David Tennant to appear on the series and has been trying to get him for a while now.

"I’m a huge fan of David Tennant, and we’ve been trying to get him on the show for quite some time," said Fuller.  "He’s such a spectacular actor.  He brings such an effervescence to every performance.  I would love to have David on the show.  Or just write for David!  I would kill and eat somebody to work with David!  He’s my favorite Doctor."

The Scottish actor and former Tenth Doctor auditioned for the lead role of Dr. Hannibal Lecter on the drama series, although the role eventually went to Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen.  Tennant is currently starring on the Fox series Gracepoint, an American remake of his UK drama series Broadchurch, with the role of Detective Emmett Carver instead of Detective Inspector Alec Hardy.

In addition, Fuller gave Fannibals some more details about what they can expect in Season 3.  "The interesting thing about Season 3 is that we are heading away from the crime procedural aspect of the story-telling," he said, "and it is very much a soap opera for the first half."

"There are some creative deaths," he continued, "but it’s much more about our regular characters as opposed to a killer of the week coming in and creating these fantastic death tableau.  We’re really focusing on the relationships between these characters and the fallout from Season 2 for the survivors who made it through the 'Red Dinner.'"

"There’s a slight evolution of the series in that way," added Fuller.  "The first half of the season I’m really excited about because it’s more like an intense psychological thriller.  I’m excited about the rematch between Hannibal and Jack Crawford."

We'll also get a look at Hannibal's past, giving us a better idea of what motivates the character.  "We are absolutely delving into his history," said Fuller.  "Not as many flashbacks as much as it is finding present day survivors from that era of his life and understanding, with greater detail, about Hannibal and his modes of human interaction."

"I would be very nervous about casting child actors to portray such iconic characters because it’s always a gamble," he added.  "For me, I kind of don’t want to imagine anybody else in this incarnation than Mads Mikkelsen."

HANNIBAL Season 2 Trailer is Served

It's almost time for the second course.

After months of anticipation, the first trailer for the second season of NBC's Hannibal debuted today online.  The series based on the novel Red Dragon by Thomas Harris was a pleasantly gory surprise, especially coming from NBC, and proved popular enough to earn a second series of thirteen episodes.

When we left FBI Special Agent Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) at the end of Season One, he was imprisoned after being framed for murder by the brilliant and cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).  The new two-minute trailer opens with an ominous voiceover from Special Agent-in-Charge Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) as he talks to Will in his cell:

"You know, in my time, I've seen people broken by the world.  This work that we do, you just can't take it all in.  My biggest fear is that we'll learn that you knew what you were doing the whole time.  Will Graham, you're under arrest for murder."

Naturally, Dr. Lecter continues to pin his crimes on Will while assisting Jack and the FBI in the investigation.  "Will claims someone else committed the crimes he's accused of."  Jack replies, "He said that person is you."  "Well, you have to investigate me," remarks Lecter as we see his mouth being swabbed for DNA.  "It's in my best interest."

A brief scene of Jack follows.  "Will Graham is either delusional or he's a psychopath, neither of which I can trust."

We then see Lecter conversing with Raul Esparza, once again as recurring character Dr. Frederick Chilton, administrator of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.  "He tells everyone that you are a monster," remarks Dr. Chilton.  "There are days when even Will doesn't understand his own thinking," replies Dr. Lecter.

Meanwhile, Dr. Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas), consultant profiler for the FBI, isn't happy about the turn of events.  "I told you not to put him out there!" she yells, presumably at Jack Crawford.

More with Jack and the imprisoned Will.  "We investigated your claims about Dr. Lecter," Jack says to Will.  "I am not the intelligent psychopath you're looking for," replies Will.

As a slow, haunting cover of the song "Stand by Me" begins, we see some disturbing images, including Lecter slowly sniffing a corpse, a figure with stag antlers rising from a stream and bodies arranged in the pattern of an eye cornea, accompanied by a voiceover from Will talking to Dr. Lecter.  "I don't know which is worse...believing I did it or believing that you did this to me."

We see Alana aiming her gun at someone approaching her, followed by a brutal kitchen fight between Dr. Lecter and Jack that results in Jack being wounded in the neck.

"I'm going to remember," continues Will, "and when I do, there will be a reckoning."

First Trailer for NBC's HANNIBAL Debuts

It's almost dinner time for fans of Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

NBC debuted the first 30-second trailer for Hannibal yesterday, which is based on the Dr. Lecter series of novels by writer Thomas Harris.  The 13-episode series was first announced in February of 2012 and makes its debut on Thursday, April 4th at 10 p.m..

Set during the first Dr. Lecter novel Red Dragon, Hannibal stars Mads Mikkelsen as Dr. Hannibal Lecter, Hugh Dancy as FBI Special Agent Will Graham, Laurence Fishburne as Special Agent Jack Crawford, Caroline Dhavernas as Dr. Alana Bloom, Kids in the Hall star Scott Thompson as Jimmy Price, and in a multi-episode arc, Gillian Anderson will appear as Lecter's own therapist, Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier.  NBC's official description of the series follows:

One of the most fascinating literary characters comes to life on television for the first time: psychiatrist-turned-serial killer, Dr. Hannibal Lecter. In this new drama from Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies," "Heroes"), based on the characters from Thomas Harris' classic novels, we see where this incredible story began.

Will Graham is a gifted criminal profiler who is on the hunt for a serial killer with the FBI. Graham's unique way of thinking gives him the astonishing ability to empathize with anyone - even psychopaths. He seems to know what makes them tick. But when the mind of the twisted killer he's pursuing is too complicated for even Will to comprehend, he enlists the help of Dr. Lecter, one of the premier psychiatric minds in the country. Armed with the uncanny expertise of the brilliant doctor, Will and Hannibal (known as a serial killer only to the audience) form a brilliant partnership and it seems there's no villain they can't catch. If Will only knew...

Starring brilliant young actor Hugh Dancy as Will Graham, "Hannibal" will breathe new life into a deadly classic.

"I don't know this kind of psychopath," says Will Graham in the trailer, "He kills them quickly and with mercy."

Jack Crawford is shown asking Dr. Lecter, of all people, for assistance.  "Doctor, we need you to help us catch a psychopath."

This is followed with a brief shot of Graham and Lecter sharing a meal with coffee.  "I don't find you that interesting," says Graham.  "You will," replies Lecter ominously.

Mads Mikkelsen Cast as Dr. Lecter in NBC's HANNIBAL

Break out the fava beans and the Chianti, because it looks like NBC has found their new Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has been cast in the leading role for the upcoming TV series Hannibal, based on the Dr. Lecter novels by writer Thomas Harris.  Mikkelsen is best known as the James Bond villain Le Chiffre from the 2006 film Casino Royale and as Draco from the 2010 remake of Clash of the Titans.  He will be the fourth actor to take on the role, after Brian Cox, Sir Anthony Hopkins and Gaspard Ulliel.

NBC gave the series, produced by Bryan Fuller, an initial 13-episode order back in February as a mid-season replacement.  Starring actor Hugh Dancy as FBI profiler Will Graham, Hannibal is set before the first Dr. Lecter novel, Red Dragon, with Graham recruiting Lecter for assistance solving murders while being unaware of how dangerous Lecter truly is.

"It’s before he was incarcerated, so he's more of a peacock," remarked Fuller.  "There is a cheery disposition to our Hannibal.  He’s not being telegraphed as a villain.  If the audience didn’t know who he was, they wouldn’t see him coming.  What we have is Alfred Hitchcock’s principle of suspense — show the audience the bomb under the table and let them sweat when it’s going to go boom.  So the audience knows who Hannibal is so we don’t have to overplay his villainy.  We get to subvert his legacy and give the audience twists and turns."

NBC Orders 13 Episodes of HANNIBAL With Some Fava Beans and a Nice Chianti

Go directly to 13-episode pickup.  Do not pass Go.  Do not collect $200.

Enterainment Weekly reports that NBC has given a full direct-to-series order of 13 episodes to Bryan Fuller's Hannibal, based on the cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter created by writer Thomas Harris.  The series will apparently be based on the first Dr. Lecter novel Red Dragon and has the following logline description:

"One-hour contemporary thriller series featuring the classic characters from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon – FBI agent Will Graham and his mentor Dr. Hannibal Lecter – who are re-introduced at the beginning of their budding relationship."

Dr. Lecter, of course, first achieved mainstream popularity with the brilliant performance by Sir Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 adaptation of The Silence of the Lambs, which earned Hopkins a much-deserved Best Actor Academy Award.  However, actor Brian Cox had previously played Dr. Lecter in the 1986 Michael Mann film Manhunter, which was based on the Red Dragon novel.  Hopkins later reprised the role in the 2001 adaptation of the third Dr. Lecter novel Hannibal, and then again a year later in Brett Ratner's adaptation of Red Dragon.
