HAWKEYE Casts the Swordsman, Clown, Echo & More

Supporting Cast Assemble!

Variety has revealed that the upcoming Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe TV series Hawkeye has cast a number of key supporting roles to join stars Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye/Clint Barton and Hailee Steinfeld as Hawkeye/Kate Bishop.

According to the article, Florence Pugh, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox, Vera Farmiga, and Zahn McClarnon will feature in the series, with Fee playing Clown/Kazimierz Kazimierczak, Dalton playing The Swordsman/Jack Duquesne, and deaf Native American newcomer Cox playing Echo/Maya Lopez.  Pugh will reprise her role as Yelena Belova from the Black Widow movie, while Farmiga will play Eleanor Bishop (Kate's mother), and McClarnon will play William Lopez (Maya's father).

Created by Stan Lee and Don Heck, The Swordsman first appeared in The Avengers (vol.1) #19 as Jacques Duquesne, who helped to liberate the Southeast Asian fictional nation of Siancong before eventually joining the Carson Carnival of Traveling Wonders.  Although his swordplay made him one of the carnival's star attractions, he gradually descended into gambling and drunkenness, his youthful idealism long behind him.

Eventually Duquesne, now older, took a young runaway named Clint Barton under his wing and taught him how to use bladed weapons, while another performer, Trick Shot, taught Barton archery, at which he proved to be a master.  The young Clint stumbled upon Duquesne stealing money from the carnival's paymaster to pay a gambling debt. Clint attempted to turn his mentor over to the law, but he was pursued by Duquesne and badly beaten.  Before Duquesne could deliver the fatal blow, Trick Shot stepped in to save the young boy.  Duquesne then fled the carnival and adopted his swordsplay act to become a costumed supervillain.

Years later, the Swordsman attempted to join the Avengers (whose members included Clint Barton, now known as the superhero Hawkeye) in order to take advantage of the benefits that went with being an Avenger.  He was refused entry into the team, largely due to Hawkeye's protests, the fact he was wanted in different states, and his threatening to kill Captain America after capturing him.  After failing the first time around, he was accepted into the Avengers.  However, he was secretly an agent of the Mandarin, who had teleported him to his castle before the Avengers could capture him, and created a pseudo-image of Iron Man to recommend the Swordsman to the Avengers.  Soon after joining the Avengers, the Swordsman revealed his true intentions and betrayed the team, planting a bomb on the control panels which could be activated by remote-control.  He soon had a change of heart and betrayed the Mandarin to save the Avengers.  Despite his heroics, the Swordsman left the ranks of the Avengers, knowing the Mandarin would now be against him.

The Swordsman has appeared in the Captain America/Avengers portion of The Marvel Super Heroes animated series, voiced by Ed McNamara, and in The Avengers: United They Stand animated episode "Comes a Swordsman", voiced by Paul Essiembre.

Created by Matt Fraction and David Aja, Clown first appeared in Hawkeye (vol.4) #8 as Kazimierz Kazimierczak, who moved to America after his circus family was killed during an armed conflict.  A traumatic accident in which his friend Janek died in an explosion in a subway lead Kazimierz to kill people with no apparent reason, from which he learned to make his living by becoming a mercenary.

He was hired by the leader of the "Tracksuit Draculas" mafia to kill Clint Barton, who recently had interfered in their plans.  Clown killed Hawkeye's neighbor, Grills, as a way to harass Barton.  The Clown arranged the return of the tracksuits for Ivan Banionis, the former owner of Barton's building, in order to lead a massive attack on the building and get it back.  The Clown and the mafia raided Barton's building, but were opposed by heavy resistance from its inhabitants.  In the end, Ivan was subdued by Kate Bishop and the Clown was dealt with by Clint while the rest of the neighbors contained the remaining tracksuits until the arrival of the police.

Created by David Mack and Joe Quesada, Echo first appeared in Daredevil (vol.2) #9 as Maya Lopez, whose father Willie "Crazy Horse" Lincoln was killed by the Kingpin.  Crazy Horse left a bloody handprint on Maya's face and a last dying wish is that the Kingpin raise Maya well, which the Kingpin honored, caring for her as his own daughter.  Believed to be mentally disabled, Maya was sent to an expensive school for people with learning disabilities. There, she managed to completely replicate a song on the piano.  She was subsequently sent to another expensive school for prodigies, becoming a gifted woman.

Maya was sent by the Kingpin to prove Matt Murdock's weakness, telling her that Matt believed Fisk was a bad person and that she was the only way to prove him wrong.  Murdock and Maya soon fell in love, but she took on the "Echo" guise to hunt down Daredevil, Matt's superhero alias.  On her face, she painted a white handprint, similar to the bloody handprint left by her dying father.  Maya proved more than a match for Daredevil, having watched videos of Daredevil and Bullseye fighting.

After several failed attempts, Maya noticed that Daredevil could easily move through the dark and figured out his weakness.  She exploited this by having a fight in a place where Daredevil's heightened senses were useless.  Maya easily took Daredevil down and nearly killed the vigilante, refusing only when she found out that Matt and Daredevil were one and the same.  Matt corrected the Kingpin's lies, and in revenge, Maya confronted and shot Fisk in the face, blinding him and starting the chain of events that lead to the man's eventual downfall (Kingpin later partially recovered eyesight through reconstructive eye surgery).

Hawkeye is currently expected to debut on Disney+ sometime in late 2021.

DAREDEVIL Season 3 Trailer Introduces Bullseye

We've never seen a talent like his.

Netflix has released a new trailer for the upcoming third season of Daredevil, based on the Marvel Comics superhero and starring Charlie Cox.  The new 60-second trailer gives us our first good look at Wilson Bethel as the supervillain Bullseye.

The trailer opens with Benjamin "Dex" Poindexter (Bethel) speaking with a counselor, about an ambush Dex was involved in.  "Talk to me about the ambush," says the counselor.

As we get a glimpse of the Kingpin/Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) in the back of a police cruiser, we then see Dex firing his weapon at someone.  "This isn't the first time you've used lethal force," continues the counselor.

This is followed by a quick glimpse of Dex taking out two masked criminals by hurling knives into their throats.  "If I were wearing a mask, the press would be calling me a hero," replies Dex.  We then see two more criminals saying they surrender, only to have Dex kill them as well with his weapon.

"I work for the federal government," says Dex in a separate scene as we see him setting a wastebasket full of tapes marked "Poindexter" on fire.  "FBI helped keep me on the straight and narrow...but now, I'm drowning in deep water."

Dex appears to hear a female voice repeatedly telling him to "Do it, Dex", which is immediately followed by glimpses of his rage and apparent mental illness.

"I've never seen a talent like yours," remarks the Kingpin as we see Dex wearing a replica of Daredevil's uniform and attacking people in a church with billy clubs.

"We're in danger," says Matt Murdock (Cox) as we see him bloodied and battered.  "He found someone to kill me!"

We see a glimpse of Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) cradling an unconscious Matt, who is wearing his Season 1 black costume once again.

In the final shot, we have Dex in his Dexdevil costume saying, "Hello, Karen.  I'm Daredevil."  This is quickly followed by a shot of Dexdevil stomping his boot hard at someone on the ground.  Yeah, that doesn't sound good if you're at all familiar with Bullseye from the comics.

If you'd like to view the new trailer, you can check it out below thanks to the official Netflix account on YouTube...

DAREDEVIL Casts Wilson Bethel as Bullseye

Here's hoping this casting is on target.

That Hashtag Show has revealed that the Netflix series Daredevil, based on the Marvel Comics superhero, has cast Wilson Bethel as Daredevil's most dangerous enemy, the assassin known as Bullseye.

Bethel was cast for the series in November, although it was originally reported he would "portray an FBI agent who will play a critical role in the conflict between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, better known as Daredevil and Kingpin respectively."

He joins new Season 3 actors Jay Ali as an fellow FBI agent named Ray Nadeem, and Joanne Whaley as Matt’s mother, Sister Maggie.  The season is expected to adapt the storyline "Born Again", by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli.

Bethel, 34, is probably best known as Wade Kinsella on The CW series Hart of Dixie.  In addition, he's appeared in episodes of How to Get Away with Murder, Criminal Minds, The Astronaut Wives Club, Bates Motel, The Young and the Restless, NCIS, JAG, and The O.C.

Created in 1976 by Marv Wolfman and John Romita, Sr., Bullseye first appeared in Daredevil (vol.1) #131 as Lester, who grew up in The Bronx, where he lived with his brother and his abusive father.  His brother's main form of recreation was playing with rifles, leading Bullseye to become an expert shot.  When he was 10 years old, his brother started a fire in their home in an unsuccessful attempt to kill their father.  Shortly thereafter, Bullseye was placed in a foster home, and became a baseball player in high school.  Bullseye was an extremely talented pitcher, and was offered a scholarship, but instead opted to enter the minor leagues.  After three games, he was called up to play a sold-out Major League game. He had surrendered no hits the entire game, and in the bottom of the ninth with two outs, he became bored and requested the coach pull him from the game.  The coach refused, and insisted that he finish the game. The opposing team's batter mocked him, accusing him of cowardice.  Bullseye threw the ball at his head, killing him.  As the ball struck, he said only one word: "Bullseye".  He was barred from professional baseball and convicted of manslaughter.

His cold demeanor and unique skills, however, meant subsequent recruitment by the National Security Agency as an assassin was inevitable.  He was soon assigned to train Contras in Nicaragua, but by the time he arrived, he claimed to have already been planning to leave the NSA.  He had planned on robbing the Contras blind and fleeing, but soon discovered they were desperately poor.  After leading the Contras in seizing a landing strip that the Colombian cocaine smugglers were using as a staging area before moving on to the United States, Bullseye planned to invite several organized crime heads to the airfield to broker a new deal with him.  He took their money, but before the deal could be finalized, the Punisher (Frank Castle) arrived.  Castle killed all the organized crime leaders in a fiery explosion from which Bullseye barely escaped.  The two engaged in a fierce battle, where Bullseye used some blood-reddened mud to paint a bull's-eye on his forehead, mocking Castle's inability to hit him.  The fight concluded when Drug Enforcement Administration agents arrived, and the Punisher fled.  Bullseye turned himself in to the D.E.A. agents and soon was assigned to infiltrate the Kingpin's criminal empire.  He obtained a costume, fled once again, and became one of the most dangerous hitmen in the world.

Bullseye soon battled (and defeated) Daredevil at a circus in order to establish his reputation as an extortionist.  Shortly after, Daredevil by chance overheard him in the midst of an extortion attempt and captured him.  Bullseye was later hired by Maxwell Glenn to kill Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson, until Daredevil interfered.  Although Bullseye defeated him again, Daredevil escaped with his life, and Bullseye's professional reputation was damaged as a result.  Seeking to regain his credibility, he challenged Daredevil on live television, but was soundly defeated.

While in prison, he learned that the Kingpin had employed a new chief assassin named Elektra, Daredevil's former lover.  After escaping prison, Bullseye attacked Elektra and impaled her on her own sai. This failed to convinced the Kingpin, who said he would only rehire him if he killed Daredevil.  Bullseye attempted to ambush Daredevil, but their battle ended with Daredevil dropping him from atop a telephone wire.  The multi-story fall broke Bullseye's back, paralyzing him.  During Bullseye's extended hospital stay following the fall, Daredevil broke into his hospital room and forced him to participate in a two-man variation on Russian roulette.  The revolver used in the game was secretly unloaded, but Daredevil had Bullseye take the even-numbered turns so that he would feel sure that the last shot was going to kill him.  Bullseye has repeatedly cited this incident as his greatest grudge against Daredevil.

Japanese scientist Lord Dark Wind liberated Bullseye and brought him to Japan, where he laced his bones with adamantium, thus restoring his mobility.  Lord Dark Wind did this so that Bullseye would work for him as an assassin in return, but in spite the favor done for him, Bullseye refused to work for free.  He instead made another play to regain the position of chief assassin for the Kingpin, who again said he would give him the position if he killed Daredevil, knowing he would fail.  He was lated hired by the villain Mysterio to attack and confuse Daredevil.  In the course of their battle, Bullseye killed Daredevil's longtime love interest, Karen Page, with one of Daredevil's own billy clubs.

Bullseye eventually made his way back to Hell's Kitchen and arrived at Shadowland, Daredevil's fortress, where he was confronted by Daredevil and a legion of Hand ninjas.  Bullseye was unprepared for his enemy's newfound ruthlessness, as Daredevil dislocated both his shoulders and then stabbed him through the heart with his own sai, in much the same way Bullseye had killed Elektra years before.  Daredevil later exhumed Bullseye's corpse, intending to resurrect him as a soldier loyal to the Hand, but the ceremony was interrupted by various superheroes, preventing Bullseye's resurrection.  It was later revealed that Bullseye was still barely alive as his body disappeared after the battle, but due to his injuries he became an invalid who had to rely on a metal lung in order to survive.  To get revenge, he was revealed to be the mastermind behind Klaw, Coyote, and Ikari's actions against Daredevil.  He was later found by the hero, who defeated Ikari and Lady Bullseye.  The warehouse where they were was subsequently destroyed, and Bullseye was nearly drowned in radioactive waste, leaving him scarred and blind.

This will be the second time the character will appear in live action, after Colin Farrell in the 2003 movie Daredevil.

Daredevil Season 3 is expected to be released on Netflix sometime in 2018.

First Full Trailer for THE DEFENDERS Gets the Team's $#!% Together

Defenders...Dissemble!

Netflix has released the first full trailer for their upcoming miniseries The Defenders, based on the Marvel Comics superteam and uniting the characters of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

The two-minute, ten-second trailer opens with opens with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) handcuffed to a table inside a police station interrogation room.  As guitar notes from the Nirvana song "Come As You Are" begin to sound, we hear the voice of detective Misty Knight (Simone Missick) tell Jessica, "You have interrupted a citywide investigation.  You stole evidence from my crime scene.  And you got my one lead killed."

"I was trying to help him," Jessica responds.

"But you didn't," counters Misty.

All at once, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) enters the room and tells Jessica to stop talking. When Jessica asks Matt who the hell he is, he responds with a smile, "My name is Matthew Murdock. I'm your attorney."

We cut to Luke Cage (Mike Colter), who is having an intimate moment with Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson).  "How does being Harlem's hero allow you to have an actual life?" she asks him.

"Right now," Luke replies, "I just wanna help people."

"I think there's someone that you need to meet," says Claire.

We see Danny Rand (Finn Jones) stopping a guy and throwing him up against the wall, only to be stopped from punching him by Luke.  "Who are you?" Danny asks.

"Who are you?" replies Luke as Danny attempts to hit Luke and gets quickly knocked down in the process.

"How come you can't be hurt?" asks Danny in a voiceover as we see his right hand glowing with the power of the Iron Fist.

"What's the deal with that fist?" asks Luke in a voiceover as we see Danny decking Luke hard in the jaw with the Iron Fist.

"I'm the immortal Iron Fist," Danny replies as we cut to the actual scene.

"You what?" asks Luke.

"You're on the same side," Claire says to both of them.

We then hear the voice of Stick (Scott Glenn), Daredevil's blind mentor, speaking in a voiceover as we see fleeting images of the four lead characters.  "You four..." he begins, "...the devil of Hell's Kitchen...the smartass detective...the righteous ex-con...and the kid with the glowing fist.  The war for New York is here...so get your shit together."

We cut to a scene of Alexandra (Sigourney Weaver), the big bad behind The Hand, confronting the four heroes.  "The more connections you have," she tells them, "the easier it will be to break you."

Next, we see the Defenders confronting Alexandra and The Hand in office building, with Matt concealing his identity with Jessica's scarf.  "You look like an idiot," Jessica tells him as we see fleeting images of Matt fighting the resurrected assassin Elektra (Élodie Yung) in a hallway.

"It's your scarf," replies Matt as we see him and the other Defenders teaming up to fight Alexandra's men in the hallway.

Lastly, we see a dinner scene of the Defenders discussing the idea of teaming up.  "We make quite a team," Danny says, only for Jessica to shut him down with a quick "No."

Danny looks at her incredulously as he begins gesturing to the others.  "What are you talking about?  Bulletproof...blind ninja...whatever it is you are..."

"Classy," replies Jessica with dripping sarcasm as Luke chuckles at her response.

If you'd like to check out the new trailer, you can view it below thanks to the official Netflix US & Canada account on YouTube...

All eight episodes of The Defenders will be released August 18, 2017 on Netflix.

GAME OF THRONES Leads 2016 Emmy Nominations with 23

Fan-favorite Tatiana Maslany finally received a long-overdue nomination for BBC America's Orphan Black, although that was the show's sole nomination.  Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones scored two nominations each, although Jessica Jones stars Krysten Ritter and David Tennant were sadly overlooked.
