So what did everyone think of Gotham’s first episode back (Rogues’ Gallery)? What about Dr. Leslie Thompkins? She plays a big part in the Batman legend. Leslie Thompkins first appeared in Detective Comics #457 (March 1976). A close friend and colleague of Bruce Wayne’s father Thomas, Leslie Thompkins was not only there for Bruce the night his parents were murdered, but would become a kind of surrogate mother figure to Bruce. Even though Batman would visit her for years on the anniversary of the Wayne murders, Dr. Thompkins would not discover his identity until...
Zsasz (He keeps count… in lives!)
Alright, I know everyone’s been waiting for this one since Victor Zsasz showed up on Gotham! Zsasz appeared earlier as I’ll explain, but his origin was revealed in The Batman Chronicles #3 (1996). It was revealed that Victor Zsasz was the head of a large international company who had amassed his own fortune along with the wealth he inherited from his parents. His parents died when Zsasz was 25, sending him into a deep depression. He began to gamble his fortune away. After losing at the Iceberg Lounge (Oswald Cobblepot’s place), he attempts to jump from a bridge to kill himself...
Poison Ivy (There’s no ointment for her!)
What’s up with that weird little girl Ivy on Gotham? Well, let me tell you a few things about Batman enemy Poison Ivy. Poison Ivy was originally Pamela Lillian Isley who first appeared in Batman #181 (June 1966). In Ivy’s original origin, she was Dr. Lillian Rose, who is seduced by a thief named Marc LeGrande into helping him steal an ancient Egyptian artifact. Afterwards, LeGrande attempts to kill her with deadly herbs so she cannot be a possible witness against him.
Damian Wayne (Son of a…)
It’s been awhile since I’ve discussed a character from the comics that hasn’t appeared on the Gotham show. Let’s continue the Robin series! The 4th Robin is the son of Bruce Wayne and Talia al Ghul, one of the daughters of Batman enemy Ra’s al Ghul (see last week’s blog post). Damian first appears as an infant in the story Batman: Son of the Demon (1987). Batman believes Talia to have had a...
Ra’s al Ghul (Talk about Old School)
You may be wondering why I’m writing about a character who just appeared on Arrow in a Batman blog. That’s because until his Arrow appearance, Ra’s has primarily been a Batman villain. Ra’s first appeared in Batman #232 (June 1971). Ra’s was born 600 years ago to a tribe of nomads that lived in a desert somewhere in Arabia. Although he only married twice, ra’s has fathered many children in his long life. His lifespan has been prolonged due to his bathing in Lazarus Pits. Ra’s wants to bring...
