2016 Character Cup - Round 5 Rerun

After a delay in the contest, we are ready to move on in the Character Cup. Andy, our fearless leader here at SpoilerTV, has talked to the polling software company and it looks like things are back on track. Just in case though, there will be a 2 day break between today's votes and the final round, just to be sure. Because this is simply a rerun of the Final Four poll that should have happened, we do not have the Favorite Villain poll or a new TV Talk Topic. However, feel free to create your own and discuss away in the comments section below. Happy voting and we'll be back 2 days after this vote ends to run the final polls and declare a winner. Thanks so much for your patience while we work with a new polling system that is more accurate than the older one.

Quote of the Week - Week of July 24

A weekly feature highlighting the best quotes on TV as picked by the Spoiler TV team. We'd love to hear your picks too so please sound off in the comments below.

Braindead -
1. Gustav: "The only way to know if he’s clean is to give him a cat-scan and we know bug people don’t want that. And...uh, here are some brass knuckles too." (Prpleight)

Mr. Robot -
1. Darlene: “Jesus, I don’t normally say this, but I have got to Instagram this. People need to know this movie exists.” (Nirat Anop)
2. Elliot: “If I do close my eyes, what is it do I picture years from now? Like Leon said, 'Doesn’t one need to understand that before they’re ready fight for their existence?’ How would my future fairytale unfold? Will I finally connect with the one I deeply care for? Will I reunite with friends long gone? See the ones I love find true happiness. Maybe this future includes people I’d never dreamed of getting close to. Even make amends with those I have unfairly wronged. A future that’s not so lonely. A future filled with friends and family. You’d even be there. The world I’ve always wanted, and you know what? I’d like very much to fight for it.” (Nirat Anop)
3. Elliot: “Krista’s wrong. Annihilation is always the answer. We destroy parts of ourselves every day. We Photoshop our warts away. We edit the parts we hate about ourselves, modify the parts we think people hate. We curate our identity, carve it, distill it. Krista’s wrong. Annihilation is all we are.” (Nirat Anop)

Suits -
1. Mike (about Gallo being an informant): "Oh, that's great. So he's not going anywhere, and neither am I unless it's in a goddamn body bag!" (Laura Markus)
2. Harvey: "Look, there's only one other thing I can think of, but you'll have to play it just right or we're gonna make things worse." Mike: "Well, you might as well say it, because from where I'm standing, they are gonna get worse whether you tell me or not." (Laura Markus)
3. Donna: "Harvey, if you go to that prison now, you'll never make it back in time for your dinner with Nathan." Harvey: "Donna, I don't care what you have to do. Get him a message that I'll be an hour late, and make sure he says it's okay." Donna: "Harvey-" Harvey: "Take care of it. I'm not leaving Mike alone in there another minute without knowing what's coming." (Laura Markus)
4. Rachel: "One of my classmates stuck [Mike] in my face in front of the entire class to win an argument."  Jessica: "And the only thing you want to stick in her face is your fist?" Rachel: "Something like that. So the professor offered me an Innocence Project case, and I want to take it, but if I do-" Jessica: "The other students will think you're afraid of her." Rachel: "Exactly." Jessica: "Then you have to make all of them afraid of you. Then the only impression they'll have of you is that you're one badass woman." Rachel: "Why do I get the feeling that when you were in law school you went through something just like this?" Jessica: "Rachel, I don't know if you've been paying attention, but I go through something like this every damn day." (Laura Markus)

2016 Character Cup - Final Four

Note 2 - We will be taking a short break once these polls close. Voting will resume on Sunday or Monday. Thanks for your patience.

Note 1 - Once the poll software took out multiple votes from round 3, yet another poll has to be re-done. This time it will be Laurel Lance vs. Buffy Summers. I apologize to everyone who is following the rules, AGAIN. It would be fan-freaking-tastic if people would only vote once per poll. I really don't want to still be voting on this contest in August.  I appreciate your help in this.

It's Final Four time for the 2016 Character Cup and for the first time ever, all the characters still standing are female, guaranteeing a second female champion. Congratulations to all Shaw, Kara, Lexa, and Buffy fans. It should be a great race to the finish. Please remember to encourage your fandoms to play honestly and to get the word out. Over in our Favorite Villains side, the final 4 contestants are all male, balancing things out a bit. Don't forget to vote for your favorites there too. A huge thanks to Rendy for creating the following image for our contest. Awesome, isn't it? Sorry I couldn't get it posted before when all these characters were still in it. Tech glitches, urgh. I hope you guys urge Rendy to enter the banner contest, which is open until August 1 for anyone interested, and don't forget to check out his blog. Until tomorrow, hit the comments section to talk about your TV pet peeves and happy voting!

Prediction Contest - Today we add a new person in contention for the prediction contest. Kirov continues to lead with 78 points but Good Samaritan moves to second with 72 points. Suzana and Paola continue to be tied for 3rd with 71 points. Nice job predicting!

Wish List Contest - Our wish list contest remains mostly unchanged with Silver and RN tied at 56 points, while Irem has 43 and Emma has 37. Congrats!

Today's TV Talk Topic: TV Pet Peeves

Today it's all about TV pet peeves. What irks you about TV these days? Is there a TV trope you hate? Are there things certain genres do that drive you up a wall? Is there anything that has become so clichéd that you groan even thinking about it? Is there a character type that just drives you batty? Feel free to vent away. Hopefully we'll all feel better afterwards.

2016 Character Cup - Round 4

Wow! Those were some close races. Sharon Raydor defeated Laurel Lance by 1 vote and Jon Snow overtook Alec Lightwood by 5 votes. Things are heating up in the 2016 Character Cup now. Because things were so close, the debut of the Favorite Villain mini-contest will start about 30 minutes later to allow me to adjust for the shows that are still being represented in the main contest. Polls for it will show up directly below these polls once I get it posted. The mini-contest will follow the same rules and procedures as the regular Character Cup. If you have any questions about that, let me know in the comments below. Thanks to everyone who is following the rules and only voting once per poll. Until tomorrow, don't forget to comment on the TV Talk Topic and happy voting!

NOTE - Favorite Villain Contest now added!

Prediction Contest - Kirov continues to lead with 66 points. Awesome! Suzana and Paola are tied for second with 63 points, and Emma comes in at 62 points. Nicely done, guys!

Wish List Contest - Silver and RN continue to top the wish list contest with 52 and 48 points respectively. Irem joins the top with 39 points. Congrats to you all!

Today's TV Talk Topic: Female Roles

For the last few years, the 2016 Character Cup has been represented by more and more females. This time we started with 33 female characters to 29 male characters. This is also the first time that we've ever only had 1 male character make it to the Elite 8 and he has only faced male characters so far.

How do you feel TV is doing at portraying females these days? Which characters best show growth in these portrayals? Are there any areas in which Hollywood could improve (Ex. sister relationships, stay at home moms, etc.)? Are there any stereotypes about women that still need to be broken? How has the increase in a more female focus changed or not changed how men are portrayed?

Favorite Villain Mini-Contest

Last year so many people had all their favorite characters out of the polls by this time that we added a special mini-contest on TV Vehicles just to make it more fun. It was a hit so we're continuing the tradition and it starts today. Over 150 nominations were whittled down to just 8. Rules work the same as the Character Cup contest with the winner moving to the next round. Enjoy and happy voting!

2016 Character Cup - Round 3A

Welcome back to round 3 of the 2016 Character Cup. We've made it to the Sweet 16. Woo hoo! Hopefully you still have characters to vote for. If not, don't worry because the mini-contest on Favorite Villain starts tomorrow. Please have your nominations in by 9 am CST if you would like them to be included in the tally. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below. Until tomorrow, play nice and happy voting!

Prediction Contest - Taking the lead this time is Kirov with a score of 51. Fantastic! In second is SpoilerTV's own Bradley Adams with 49 points, while Maria Sol has 48. You guys are doing great!

Wish List Contest - Over in the wish list contest, the standings are still the same with Silver in first with 46, RN in second with 39, and Maria Sol in third with 32. I'm jealous.

Today's TV Talk Topic: International TV

Along with the rise of cable TV, there has been a rise in international (read non-American) TV. What are your favorite international shows? How do watch shows from other countries (no links that break copyright please)? How do international and American shows differ? How are they the same? Are there any countries whose TV you particularly like?

2016 Character Cup - Round 2C

Note #1 -If you already read this in Round 2B, skip to the polls. It's the exact same thing.

Note #2 - Today's polls will be split into 2 posts for labeling purposes. The first one is already posted. See the link below. Please check both out so you don't miss voting for anyone. The TV Talk Topic of the day will remain the same for both. Questions? Hit the comments below.

Welcome back to the 2016 Character Cup. I am sorry that the 2B polls were delayed but last night I was going through the poll stats and noticed several voting discrepancies in one poll. I then checked all the polls and found suspicious voting on a couple of others. Unbeknownst to me, the polling software was also tracking suspicious activity in all 3 days of the Cup so far. When I woke up, they had already taken out several of the cheating votes and as a result the outcomes of 2 polls have changed. Vanessa Ives and Alicia Clark have actually lost their first rounds, but while Sameen Shaw had over 1,000 votes discounted, she still won her round. Unfortunately, this poll has to be run again anyway because it should have been between Shaw and Scully instead of Shaw and Ives.

I apologize to everyone in ALL fandoms who voted legitimately. The majority of all people voting do respect the rules and run a clean contest. Sadly, it only takes a couple of people to ruin the fun for everyone. It's a shame because not only do they look bad but they make their show and their fandom look bad too. That's not fair because most people in any given fandom are awesome. If you do happen to come across someone encouraging people to cheat, please either ask them to stop or let me know. I would certainly hope this would not happen again and the rest of the Character Cup would proceed smoothly, but I cannot guarantee it. If you notice a discrepancy in the scores from what I post, please let me know. This may (or may not) be what happened in the Episode Competition too when another poll had to be re-run. Just know that we are doing our best to make sure every poll is accurate.

Mini-Contest - Now that that unpleasantness is covered, let's move to more positive things. Nominations for the Favorite Villain mini-contest open today for about 36-48 hours. This will give me time to tabulate the nominations and get the contest ready to go for round 4. Please remember that villains from the remaining 8 shows still represented in the Character Cup in round 4 will not be eligible for the mini-contest. Its purpose is to engage fandoms that are no longer represented. You can name up to 3 favorite villains but only one per show. If you have any questions, please hit the comments below.

Prediction Contest - MariaSol moves to the lead in our prediction contest with 38 points. Great job! In second is Pixip with 36 points and tied with 35 points are Madeline, Kirov, and Saoirse. Nice work, everyone.

Wish List Contest - Currently Silver should be the happiest with how things are going with a score of 34 points. RN has 31, while MariSol has 30 points. Glad things are going your way.

Today's TV Talk Topic: TV Wish Lists

A magic genie grants you 5 wishes (or a long-lost billionaire relative buys you your own network for those less into fantasy) to do anything you want in TV, providing it falls within FCC standards (so no porn). Standard Aladdin rules apply - no wishing for more wishes, no resurrecting the dead (unless it fits within the genre or you can find a plausible explanation), and no making someone fall in love with you. So what do you wish for? If you want, you can make 2 wish lists: one pure fantasy and another more realistic.

2016 Character Cup - Round 2A

The first round is about finished and wow, was that brutal. Of the top 5 characters last year, 2 aren't in the contest and the other 3 got out in round 1. Jamie Fraser, last year's #5, lost by one vote. I have a feeling this year's contest is going to be very interesting. If you would like more stats on the Cup so far, please click the link below. There are also links to the rules and each of the rounds so far. You still have about 5 minutes to cast your vote for round 1D if you haven't yet. Polls have been very close there too. From now on, no rounds will overlap so you can expect new polls to go up approximately 15-30 minutes after the previous polls close. Polls last for about 24 hours. Happy voting!

Prediction Contest (including rounds 1A and 1B) - With the left side of the bracket complete, Isaac is in first place with 13 out of 16 correct. Nice job! Tied in second place with 12 correct are JB and MariaSol. 13 people got 11 out of 16 right, none of which were me. My brackets are already a mess. How are you doing?

Wish List Contest - Both Silver and MariaSol should be pretty happy since 11 of the 16 polls went their way. 10 went Emma's way, while Amber and Dahne had 9.

Mini-Contest - Last year we added a mini-contest on favorite TV vehicles when there were 8 characters left in order to keep more people interested once their favorites were out. This year we are going to do Favorite Villains. Shows with characters still in the contest at round 4 are NOT eligible. Nominations will be posted in tomorrow's polls.

Today's TV Talk Topic:
 Hollywood's Dedication to Recycling

Reboots, remakes, un-cancellations, bringing back long-cancelled shows, Americanizing other countries' shows - whatever you want to call it, Hollywood is fascinated with recycling shows, movies, comics, characters, and plot lines these days. How do you feel about these old ideas made new? Which of these shows have you really enjoyed? Which would have been better left to history? Which of the new crop are you looking forward to...or not? How do you feel about shows like 24, Heroes, Full House, Boy Meets World, Gilmore Girls, The X-Files, Twin Peaks, Prison Break, etc. coming back after long absences with the same actors? Which past shows would you like to be remade?  Which shows do you hope are never remade?

2016 Character Cup - Rules

2016 Character Cup Rules:

1. This is a Silly Internet Contest, Not the Fate of the Nations - This contest is meaningless. The results are meaningless.  No one involved in TV cares about who wins.  It will NOT change the fate of any TV show anywhere. Don't take it seriously. Have fun. Discuss a lot.

2. Focus on Characters, Not People - Anyone can vote however they want for whatever reason they want and anyone can give their opinion on a character, favorable or not. Talking negatively about a character is NOT the same as attacking their fans. Keep the conversation to the characters. If you don't like what someone says about your character, comment on what you love about them. You might get new people to try your show.  It's simple but worth repeating.  Characters are NOT real.  People are.

3. The Aliens Haven't Landed.  There's No Conspiracy Here - I have no hidden agenda. Everything except people playing two characters is placed in brackets based on the number of nominations and polls. If your character goes against a giant, it's not personal. Mine will too.  If I spell your character's name wrong, again it's not personal.  It's just that I'm a sucky typist or sleep-deprived.  Tell me; I'll fix it.

4. Leave Sour Grapes on the Vine - Yeah, it sucks when your favorite didn't make it or gets kicked off by a character you hate. Yep, the winning character will come from the most organized fandom that gets the word out the fastest. Them's the facts of life and internet polls. It doesn't mean we can't still have fun. Don't dwell on past polls or vetch about life's unfairness and it will be more enjoyable for everyone.

5. It's Not 2048 and My Name's Not Dorian - I will do my very best to keep the contest running smoothly and let you know the approximate time each poll ends. However, I am human and occasionally do silly things like get the time zone changes wrong. Again see #3. Let me know and I'll fix it. I apologize in advance for any technical difficulties.

6. Comments are the Wellspring of Hiatus Life - Most of us anxiously await the return of our favorite shows. Why not distract yourself with a little TV Talk? Each day we have a new topic. Come join us because even if you have no one to vote for in the polls, you can still discuss. While this contest is just a silly piece of internet fluff, the conversation here goes deep so jump on in.

Nuts and Bolts:

1. All polls, even the final one, will be about 24 hours long. A new poll goes up every day unless something unforeseen happens so you always know when your favorites compete.  Due to our time crunch, the first round polls will be a little different and overlap each other. Please see the note in the first paragraph for details.
2. Everything is head-to-head competition unless there's a tie and then both go to the next round.
3. One vote per person per poll.  Please do not try to cheat the polls.  Please do not encourage other people to try to cheat the polls.  It's annoying, stupid, and wastes everyone's time.  It makes you look bad.  It makes your fandom look bad.  It makes your character look bad.  It makes your show look bad.  It makes all internet polls look bad.  Just don't.

2016 Character Cup - Round 1D

Note:  If you already went to Round 1C, this contains the same information so feel free to mosey on down to the polls.  :-)

Today we are off to the right side brackets, but don't worry. If you didn't vote in the left side brackets, there is still time. You can find the links to them below. Those close at 8 pm CST. Please remember that there are 2 different set of polls so make sure you vote in both. Like yesterday, today's polls will also be split into two with the first one already posted. We also have 2 TV Talk Topics as well. Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. I've really enjoyed hearing how your TV year went and your thoughts on the characters in the contest. Below you'll find the link to the brackets and contest rules. If you haven't read the rules yet, please do so. We want everyone to have a great contest. As always, if you have any questions, leave them in the comments along with who you voted for and your thoughts on the TV Talk Topic. Thanks for a great start to the Character Cup and happy voting!

Just don't.

Today's TV Talk Topic:

***Thanks to Ceryle for helping to create this topic.

Which longer-running shows have you thought were creatively bankrupt but then surprised you by turning things around? Have you ever been close to giving up a show but then they did something to renew your interest? What shows were unappealing at first (poor pilot, bad first season, whatever) but later were awesome. Have you ever grown to love a show that at first you didn't like at all? Did the show get its act together or did you just acquire a taste for it? Should networks take this into account when making renew/cancel decisions?

2016 Character Cup - Round 1C

Today we are off to the right side brackets, but don't worry. If you didn't vote in the left side brackets, there is still time. You can find the links to them below. Those close at 8 pm CST. Please remember that there are 2 different set of polls so make sure you vote in both. Like yesterday, today's polls will also be split into two with the second one posted 10 minutes after these.

Rankings/Brackets

Round 1A voting
Round 1B voting

2015 Character Cup Rules:

4. Leave Sour Grapes on the Vine (aka the most violated rule) - Yeah, it sucks when your favorite didn't make it or gets kicked off by a character you hate.

2016 Character Cup - Round 1B

NOTE: If you have already been to round 1A, these are the exact same notes except the TV Talk Topic is different. Check that out but skip the rest.

Welcome to round 1 of the 2016 Character Cup. Woo hoo! I hope this is a fun, surprising, and not too serious contest for all, regardless of the winner. First off, thanks to everyone who helped find pictures for the Cup. I really appreciate it. It allowed me to create the polls early so we could start as soon as the prediction contest deadline ended. You guys rock! Thanks! The Character Cup goes by very quickly so don't forget to check SpoilerTV every day so you can vote, check the prediction standings, and most importantly, participate in the daily discussion. We have a new TV Talk Topic every day and all are encouraged to participate.

Because the episode contest ran into July and because I had classes that prevented me from getting started on nominations for a couple of days, this year's contest will be a little shorter than before so that we can be finished by the end of July. That means that we will be completing round 1 in less than 2 days. The first of 2 brackets has already gone up so please check it out too. The next 2 brackets will go up roughly 13 hours later. Regardless of when polls are posted, they are always about 24 hours long. If you have any questions about the contest itself, how characters were placed on the brackets, or the timing of rounds, please put them in the comments below. Remember that there are 2 byes in the first round and that any characters that are portrayed by the same actor go against each other in round 1.

To ensure that every has a good time, please read the rules below. They will be posted throughout round 1 and then a link will be provided to them. There are also links below to the list of character rankings and official bracket. Once round 1 is over, the official bracket will be placed on each post so you know how the characters are doing. The daily TV Talk Topic will also be found above the polls each time.

Now that you've had time to reflect on the 2015-2016 TV season, how did it compare for you with recent seasons? Did you find some new shows to love? Were your returning shows what you expected? Were there any surprises, good or bad? Are there any new characters that you already love? Did you think that dramas or comedies were particularly strong this year?

Today's TV Talk Topic:

There are a lot of awesome characters but unfortunately not all of them could get in. Below are the characters who just missed getting into the contest so it seems fair to begin our TV Talk by honoring them. Also, are there any shows you love that don't have a character representing them? This is a great time to talk about those shows that are not a part of the Cup. Who knows? Maybe you will get others to try your show so they can get in next year.

Characters whose shows are being represented by another character: Leo Fitz (Agents of SHIELD), Felicity Smoak/Oliver Queen (Arrow), Derek Morgan (Criminal Minds), Nick Clark (Fear the Walking Dead), Walter Bishop (Fringe), Tyrion Lannister/Sansa Stark/Daenerys Targaryan (Game of Thrones), Arizona Robbins (Grey's Anatomy), Connor (H2GAwM), Ravi Chakrabarti (iZombie), Leonard Snart (Legends of Tomorrow), Juliet Burke (LOST), Killian Jones (Once Upon a Time), Helena/Delphine Cormier/Sarah Manning (Orphan Black), Claire Fraser (Outlander), John Reese/Harold Finch (Person of Interest), Bellamy Blake/Clarke Griffin (The 100), Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead), and Waverly Earp/Nicole Haught (Wynonna Earp).

Characters who just missed the cut-off: James Cole (12 Monkeys), Pope Cody (Animal Kingdom), Sheldon Cooper (TBBT), Jane Doe (Blindspot), Sherlock Holmes (Elementary), Tim Riggins (Friday Night Lights), Phoebe Buffay/Rachel Green (Friends), Santana Lopez (Glee), Carrie Mathison (Homeland), Gregory House (House), Raylan Givens (Justified), Dutch (Killjoys), Phil Miller (Last Man on Earth), Elizabeth McCord (Madam Secretary), Athos (The Musketeers), Ziva Davis (NCIS), Marty Deeks (NCIS:LA), Nikita/Alex Udinov (Nikita), Emily Thorne (Revenge), Maura Isles (Rizzoli & Isles), Harvey Specter (Suits), Quinn King (UnREAL), Damon Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries), Selina Meyer (Veep), Bea Smith (Wentworth), and Xena (Xena).

Quote of the Week - Week of July 10

I apologize for this being so late. I was preparing for the Character Cup and completely forgot that it was my turn to post this week. Shameless plug - The Character Cup begins at 8 pm CST tonight. You have until that time to get in your predictions if you want to join our prediction contest.

Devious Maids -
1. Zoila: “You know, that’s not the worst idea.” Rosie: “Aww, I always like it when I don’t have the worst idea.” (Lindsey)
2. Rosie: “You’re stealing your daughter’s audition? That is not right.” Carmen: “It’s what Daniela would have wanted.” Marisol: “She’s in Puerto Rico, not heaven.” (Lindsey)
3. Rosie: “Cults are a great place to meet new people, maybe a new man, huh?” (Lindsey)
4. Rosie: “So he wanted to know your secrets.” Genevieve: “He even made me tell him every sordid detail of my sexual history! Of course, that part I rather enjoyed.” (Lindsey)
5. Genevieve: "Don't look so shocked. I've belonged to a cult before. In my defense it was the eighties...and I thought it was an exercise class." (Prpleight)
6. Evelyn: "Now if you'll excuse me I need to revamp my entire personality." (Prpleight)

Mr. Robot -
Darlene: "We are in a war and we are on the losing side of it." (Jimmy Ryan)

Suits -
1. Rachel: "Harvey, what are you doing here?" Harvey: "I came to let you know that I dropped him off, and, um, he looks as good as he could look. And I think he's gonna be okay." Rachel: "I appreciate that. But you could have told me that over the phone. So what are you really doing here?" Harvey: "I miss him." Rachel: "I miss him too." (Laura)
2. Rachel: "Jessica, I'm sorry. I didn't-" Jessica: "You know, this used to be my desk. Different desk, same spot. Jackson was there, Burns was there, and Kleiman was by the door. He hated being by the door."
Rachel: "I don't know any of those names." Jessica: "Because they got out a long time ago, because this life isn't for everyone. And it's harder on some than it is on others." Rachel: "What are you saying?" Jessica: 'I'm saying that for women, the rules are different. You can't be everyone's friend and invite them to tea because warm means you're weak. I wasn't gonna be weak. But now the flip side to that is, if you're strong, they think you're cold. And that's why they're all gone because they see me as unfeeling and manipulative. I'm tired of it." Rachel: "Well, they're wrong." Jessica: "You're just saying that because you're seeing me like this." Rachel: "No, that has nothing to do with it. My dad told me that the only reason he came to the church today was because you told him if he didn't, he would lose me forever. And you didn't do that because you were trying to manipulate some situation. You did it because you care. And because you did it, I will be loyal to you forever." (Laura)

UnREAL -
1. Rachel: “[…]Don’t think, okay, it makes you look fat.” (Lindsey)
2. Rachel: “Can I be honest with you for a second?” Darius: “I don’t know, can you?” (Lindsey)
3. Chet: “Hey, did you get the flowers? You didn’t mention them, and I’m thinking maybe you hated them.” Quinn: “You are the only person who could make my father’s funeral about you.” (Lindsey)
4. Madison: “You don’t know what you’re talking about. Quinn loves me.” Jay: “Okay, first, Quinn doesn’t love anybody, especially you.” (Lindsey)
5. Quinn: “Is that why you called, to ruin my date?” Chet: “It wasn’t a date. It was a funeral.” Quinn: “Yeah, weirdest first date ever, I think I’m in love, Chet.” (Lindsey)

2016 Character Cup - Wish List Bracket Contest

Hi! This post is primary for people who have already read the prediction contest and rankings post. If you have not, you may be lost here.  Also don't forget to get your predictions in before 8 pm CST on Thursday, July 21.  The link to the prediction contest is:

In response to people wanting to create a bracket based on who they want to win as opposed to who they think will win, I have created a wish list contest just for fun.  Again the form will be locked at 8 pm CCST on Thursday, July 21.  The good thing is that it should be a little easier to pick.  Right?  Well, maybe.  If you would like to keep track of who you want to win, go to:

2016 Character Cup - Rankings and Prediction Contest

The nominations and rankings are done and now the real fun begins. Below you will find a complete list of characters that made it into the 2016 Character Cup, the official brackets, and homework.  (This should be the last post with a lot of information thrown at you.  Woo hoo!)  For those of you who are new to the Character Cup, one additional piece of fun is the prediction contest. How well do you think you know the SpoilerTV community? Whether you think you do or not, the prediction contest is a lot of fun.  This is your chance to guess which characters will win each round. Remember the prediction contest is about who you think will win, NOT who you want to win. Like last year we are using Challonge to run the prediction contest. You may have to sign up to use it (not quite sure), but it is completely free.  You have until 8 pm CST on Thursday, July 21 to complete your prediction.  To participate, go here:

Prediction Contest:

1. Only one prediction per person. If you would like to also create one on how you wish the contest would turn out, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
2. When titling your prediction, please use your Disqus name (or SpoilerTV name) so I know whose brackets are whose.
3. Your predictions can be saved and edited up until predictions close, but to do so you must copy and paste a very, very long link in order to find your prediction again. It will only show up once so if you even think you might be changing your predictions, I highly suggest saving the link somewhere. I will not be able to find the link for you.
4. All predictions must be finalized by 8 pm CST on Thursday, July 21 to be eligible. Once the contest starts, no other predictions will be accepted.
5. Challonge has a weighted scale so correct guesses in the first round are worth 1 point, the second round 2 points, and so on until the 5th and final round.
6. After every round, I will post our winners so far. The grand prize winner wins…bragging rights. Hey, I'm a teacher. I can't afford cool prizes. Unless you love Supernatural and then I have some leftover prizes you can win.

Picture Homework:

The first round will probably start on Friday to give everyone ample time to get their prediction brackets in and to put the final touches on our TV Talk Topics. Until then, I'm assigning homework. Ugh, I know. What do you expect? I'm a teacher. I need good headshot pictures of the characters that are in the contest. Otherwise your favorite character is stuck with the first picture I find on Google. Since all the characters are now revealed, it's a great time to start looking. The guidelines are below. You can send them to me via Twitter @dahne1 or simply put them in the comments below. Thanks in advance for your help in this.

Picture Guidelines:

1. Must be clothed and PG please!
2. Clearly shows the character's face
3. Is just the character and not a group thing
4. Must be the character and not the actor (no premiere party or tabloid photos)
5. No gifs - jpeg or png only please

2016 Character Cup - Nominating / Ranking Polls

Sorry for the delay in getting these polls up. We had a unique situation in that we had more nominations than ever before but 76% were single nominations (only nominated 1 person) so we actually ended up with less variety in characters nominated than usual. This led to characters getting into the contest with the fewest number of nominations yet, making it harder to adjust to either a 32 or 64 Character Cup. As such, I have added it to the things to change when it comes to the nomination process next year. But that's for next year. Today we have the nominating and ranking polls. This is the most complicated process to explain of the whole shindig so if you've done this before or don't care why you're voting, skip on down to the important section and then the polls. :-P

Cup Set-Up:

In the end, I decided to go with a 62 Character Cup, so the 2 most nominated characters will have a bye in the first round. That means that they automatically go to round 2. It made more sense than doing a nominating poll of 25+ characters that received a grand total of 2 nominations each and have those winners go against the highest nominated characters in the first round. Call it a timesaver.

Ranking Polls - Characters from different shows that are portrayed by the same actor will go against each other in the first round. (Ex. Eliot Spencer will face Jake Stone in round 1). Everyone else will be placed in March Madness-style brackets based on how many nominations they received. If they had the same number of nominations (which most did due to less nomination variety), they are in the ranking polls today. Sorry for the very long polls. All of the characters in ranking polls are in the contest already. Today's polls simply assign the order they are placed in the brackets, which affects what characters they go up against.

Nominating Polls - We did have 2 shows where more than one character tied for the highest number of nominations. Therefore, for those shows, we need to choose a champion to represent in the Cup.

IMPORTANT:

1. If you don't see your favorite characters, that does NOT necessarily mean that they didn't make it. The top 8 characters and a couple others did not need ranking or nominating polls in order to place them in the contest.

2. All polls are 1 vote only no matter the length. Feel free to grouse about how mean I am in the comments. I'm with you. I'm grousing at myself too.

3. Because we are significantly behind in this contest, polls should close around 7 pm CST. That will give me time to get the prediction contest going before we need to start the actual Cup.

4. In order to irritate the internet Cheaterpants, you must log in with social media or create an account with Opinion Stage in order to vote. I know. It's ridiculous that people cheat polls that have ZERO impact on anything at all, but since they do we're trying to create the most poll integrity possible. Rules are still that you can only vote once per poll. Please be respectful of that and ensure a happy contest for all. If you have trouble signing in, please hit the comments below.

5. Speaking of comments, this is a great place to talk up your favorites. Happy voting!

2016 Character Cup - Nominations Open

Summer is in the swing of things so that means it is time for the 2016 Character Cup. Nominations will remain open until Sunday at 3 pm CST. Nominating polls will come immediately after if necessary and then people will have 3 days to create their brackets if they want to compete in the prediction contest. (Don't worry if you're not sure what these are. Information about them will come after nominations close.) If you haven't participated in the Character Cup on SpoilerTV before, it's basically a fun contest to pass the hiatus. There's nothing serious about it. People nominate their favorite characters (male and female, current and/or ended) and the top 64 characters go head-to-head to choose a favorite. Let me stress that this contest has NOTHING to do with the "best" character, which is subjective, or the best acted character, also subjective, or most influential character, you guessed it - still subjective. It is simply a way to show your favorite characters some love and pass the time until the fall season starts. So think back on all those great TV shows you've watched in the past or are watching now. Who are your favorites?

While the Character Cup works the same way as other SpoilerTV summer contests, there are some differences. The biggest is that each show can be represented by only 1 character. This allows more shows to be represented and more people to participate. If a show has a number of characters who are close in nominations, then I will hold a nominating poll so that the fandom can choose their champion. You can also only nominate 1 character from a show. If you nominate more than 1 character from a show, then all your nominations for that show will be invalid. So think carefully about which character you think best represents your favorite shows.

Another change is that unlike the Favorite Show Contest, once a character wins this competition they are retired. That means that LOST's Jack Shephard, Supernatural's Dean Winchester and Castiel, and Person of Interest's Root cannot run again. This keeps people from grousing that the same people win all the time. For me though, the best difference is the TV Talk Topic. Each day there is a new TV topic to discuss so even if you don't have anyone to vote for that day, you can still be part of the conversation. If you have any great TV Talk topics, please add them to the nomination form. Last year we had several great discussions including one about how TV is different around the world. That one was a real eye opener.

Nomination Rules (PLEASE READ):

1. Only 1 Submission per person. If you submit multiple times ALL your submissions will be removed.

2. You can nominate up to 2 males and 2 females but they must be on the same nomination form. They can be from shows currently airing or those long ended and everything in between. Only characters from scripted shows are eligible though.

3. Nominating more than 1 character from the same show will invalidate ALL your nominations for that show. Please make sure that ALL the characters you nominate are from different shows. Only 1 character per show can get into the contest so please nominate from a variety of shows.

4. Only nominations with both the character AND the TV show will be included. Also please use the character's full name if you can. While I watch a lot of shows, I don't watch everything. I had no idea that Daenerys Targaryen and Khaleesi were the same person. If a character is always called by their nickname, that will work too.

5. Please do NOT nominate Jack Shephard (LOST), Dean Winchester (Supernatural), Castiel (Supernatural), or Root (Person of Interest). These characters are already past winners and therefore cannot run again. Any nominations for them will not be counted.

6. While this is only the nominating stage, it's a great idea to talk up your character in the comments section. Last year we had several characters that people wished they had nominated but forgot about. This is especially true for shows that are not currently airing.

7. Nominations end Sunday at 3 pm CST. Nominating polls will begin almost immediately after nominations end and will last about 24 hours.

8. Questions? Ask in the comments below.

Quiz: Guess the Show - I Love the 90's Edition

'Sup, man? How's it hangin'? Come celebrate your knowledge of 90's TV with us! Originally I was going to divide this into easy and harder like I did with the 80's quizzes, but the 90's had a ton of cartoons, animated shows, and kids programs. Therefore I've divided it into 2 parts again with the first being more adult or family-oriented shows (no animation) while the second is a mix of cartoons for all ages and shows that primarily targeted a younger audience. I hope these quizzes are off the heasy and you have a slammin' time. Otherwise, my bad. Just remember that no matter how well you do on these quizzes, here at SpoilerTV, we think you're all that and a bag of chips.
